I've been on this board for a long time although I don't post alot I am always looking around. Got loads of useful tips from reading through topics. Hopefully will get some useful advice on my website i've been building lately. I'd appreciate your opinions on what you think of it so far.

www.ThorndalPhotography.com

Still needs alot of work to get exactly what I want but it all takes time.

Anything that should be drastically changed?

I want it to look as professional as possible.

Thanks.

There is no apostrophe in photos, and it doesn't need a capital first letter there either.

Site looks as though it will be good though.

I like the layout, nice and simple, but the large white borders on the gallery thumbnails jars a bit too much for my liking. Also, when you open the pictures, well on my screen anyway, I have to scroll to see the whole thing, and then the navigation bar drops down too, so I never quite see the whole image, which after looking at a few gets a bit annoying. As Chuckurbarla said, spell check everything. However, great start!

It's a good start but a couple of things need to be looked at.....

The grey block is distracting, it either needs darkening or changing to black.

I assume you are replacing the white box at the bottom?

The first item in menu has a different text size to the other two.

The white border on the photos is too much of a contrast to the black background.

The contact page isn't formatting correctly on either IE or Firefox.

The portfolio pages don't work properly in Opera (keep geting spurious images half on half off the page) and the front page has a lot of wasted space to the bottom right while being very busy top and left.

Apart from the fixable things mentioned here and further up, it has real potential I reckon :)

Chuckurbarla - Cheers mate, will adjust those, my grammer isnt that great so I appreciate that.

LadyLens - The borders on the thumbnails are one of the things I hate aswell but we cant figure out where the coding for that is yet.

As for the scrolling down, I did have it set up so the picture fitted inside the web page but I thought they looked pretty small. I will change that back to the older version so they fit snugly in the web browser.

^^Gord^^ - By the grey block do you mean the News Bar?? I'm considering getting rid of it all together as I never know what to write in it lol.

White box at the bottom will be replaced soon.

I cant see the different text size that you mean.

White border around the thumbnails as above.

The contact page has been giving us a lot of problems and we are still struggling with it. It’s a right pain.

Forbiddenbiker - Thanks for that. Its good to know that you didn’t feel lost or anything. Is there anything that you didn’t like other than whats listed above.

Steep - I'm not familiar with Opera, is that a different internet browser?? Will try and even out the page some more.

Inaneredstripe - Thanks. Any thing you think needs attention.

Oldfart - what brower are you opening them in at the moment, I uploaded them at the wrong size and havent sorted that out yet. Just curious what browser its causing an issue in.

Thanks for all the comments and advie everyone. They are all good points and its good to get some positive response on the site.

:agree:

The border is set in the css stylesheet.
The .thumb class is set to a fixed width of 150px, so each thumbnail image will be padded out to be 150px wide.

You could remove the fixed width and replace with a border of say 5px, but as each image is a different size this will give you lots of different sized thumbnails...

Nice clean layout by the way. If you want some help let me know.

Cheers for the advice. Do you know how I could change the colour of the background on the thumbnail to a different colour, like black or a dark grey???

Thanks.

Hi, the dark and people galleries just don't want to load properly in FireFox. Shame because it looks good but as it is I can't view it properly.

Lol

Hi Dal,

I concur with Chuck. But your server is straining: 10 seconds to load a photo!

I'm in the process of building my web portfolio right now.

From the research i have done, the general opinion is that web users are lazy. So only show a few of your very best images.
You don't want the few images people will open to be "ok", they need to be great.

Only present your very best work.
The silver lining here is that you will speed up your loading times a lot.

I also feel that if I were a possible client, i would want to know a little more about what you do & have done.
(perhaps a Services tab?)

What type of photography can/do you do?
Why should i hire you?
What is your artists statement?
How do i order prints?
How do i get a quote?

People are too lazy to push the "contact" button.
Sad but true.

Hope this helps. :)

Simon
