Is this a good use of the police or courts time?

In this case, I think not!

Not quite sure how this came to light (maybe the guy saw her pick it up), but would not describe him as a victim of crime either. Where is the line drawn on how much to hand in, £1, £5, £20??? I found £20 on a street once and it paid for my night out (was 20 years ago when beer was cheaper)!!

In some ways it seems a waste of resources & tough to get a criminal record because of it, BUT, I actually agree with what happened.

Not only was it inconsiderate, but It's stealing by finding & she should have handed it in. Too many scrotes think only about themselves & b****r everyone else.

i think if you find £10 or whatever in the street with little or no ability to locate an owner then i would spend it on cider and a pizza.
but if i was in a shop or a public area then i would have a think but i do think it is poor to use the courts, a caution would have been fine.

So what amount should be handed in? If you found £1 would you pocket it? Would I hand it into the shop - unlikely as I would expect it to be unlikely that someone would claim it and would they pocket it? Not sure I would consider someone who pockets £20 they find a scrote?

after it was dropped by a customer who withdrew it from a nearby cash point

I would hand it in, but I think this case was a waste of time and money.

Easiest thing to do is hand into a police station, get your copy of the found report and after a few weeks if it's not claimed, then it's yours.

I read something about this recently on a police force web page (can't remember which one). It said you might as well keep one or two pounds found in the street as the rightful owner isn't going to report the loss of such a small amount. It suggested £20 or above should be handed in as it is likely that the loss will have been reported. They made no comment about amounts in between.

It also made a distinction between lost items and things which have been abandoned. Anything you find which has been abandoned, you can keep.

Steve.

Steve.
If I dropped any amount of money, I very much doubt I'd report it. Kick myself for dropping it maybe, but I'd certainly feel I was wasting police time for reporting the fact I'd dropped some money.

The real problem is police and courts of law jump at petty crime because it is EASY and REWARDING to them while a lot of large scale fraud, paedophilia go unresolved for decades

That's easier said than done these days as all the local police stations are being closed down near me. The nearest police station to me is now in the centre of Cardiff where I would have to pay for parking!

Saying that I would personally hand the money to the shop assistant as my conscience would be clear regardless of whether it was returned to the rightful owner.

Good point, nearest one is around 5 miles away but only open at certain times. Other in central cambridge so would be a total pain to get to.

Aye, right enough, forgot about that, same up here.
I wouldn't give it to the shop, it'd lie there for ever 'cos they won't have the time to take it to the Police and if it's a larger shop, they keep things for a few months then take them to the local station. That I do know from experience.

yes that is my thought exactly.

A news up date on this this morning, apparently the woman was asked 2-3 times if she had picked up the note, by the police, and each time she denied it,
until she was shown the CCTV footage ...
The legal bod that was discussing it, said that if she had come clean initially, there would probably have nothing more than a stiff talking to.

I am morally undecided on this one...

OK I find £20 on the floor, no one about. What do you do? Take it to the police. A week later a chancer comes in.. "Lost £20 mate anyone find one?"
"Where was it lost"
"Dunno mate, was there, then it wasn't"
"Ah yes here you are."

Few weeks ago we parked in Chapelfield in Norwich. Sam is always finding money! He made me stop the entire A140 to retrieve the £1 coin he saw on the crossing. Whilst paying for the ticket he sticks his hand in the change bit and finds £4. what do you do? No one around had recently paid, no one coming back to the machine. Hand it in to security? I am sure they would accept it! SO I made him share it with his sister for 2 icecreams each.

Is that wrong?

No. That, sir, is the Samelia ice cream fund. :D

Or hand in at the shop and get a receipt / report. It's happened to me a few times over the years and each time it has not been claimed so was given to me.

well if there was anything in the wallet that would help me to identify the person, e.g. anything with name or address, I would ensure I got it back to him without involving the police. I wouldn't expect a reward for doing so, however I hope he would appreciate my honesty... If nothing in the wallet to identify him then for sure for that amount I would take it to the police as such an amount would hopefully be reported.

£20 on a corner though, with no one about, how can you prve it was x y or z's money? I would not hand in to a shop as 99% + chance would be pocketed....

Only a few weeks ago I picked up a fiver sitting on the forecourt at a motorway service station; took it into the shop, told the cashier - she responded that I should keep it! Popped it into the charity box instead.

Waiting nervously for the blues and twos to pull up outside the house now with the curtains closed. Thank goodness for google - there are more countries without an extradition treaty than you might think :-)

And he's still a magistrate...
