is this a good starter camera??

the D60 is supposed to be a great camera, but i believe that you will need to buy lens' with the motor inbuilt to use auto focus as the camera doesn't have an internal motor...if i'm wrong,i'm sure someone will correct the errors of my way

seriously though,i'd recommend popping down to your local jessops, jacobs etc..and try them all out within your price range.you won't go far wrong with any of the major brands like canon, nikon, sony, olympus etc....

it is a good starter camera yes and like stan said when you buy any new lenses you will need ones with motors in it to use AF but as it comes with 2 lens and as you say it as a starter kit it should be more than enough.

as said above it is a good starte camera and you will need af lens but have you held the camera are you sure you wouldn't benefit better from other brands like sony and its a200 and why is it nikon why not olympus did you just decide to go with canon or nikon who are the market leaders.

I brought this camera in january, and i am enjoying using it. However s mentioned before lenses used with this camera need there own focus motor to autofocus. I don't think the Tamron lens in this bundle has a focus motor and will therefore not autofocus, so you may want to consider this before purchasing.

Edit: Actually after a further reading i think the Tamron lens does have a focus motor so will autofocus on the D60. But im not sure, so maybe someone could confirm this.

A D40 will suffice. I have a D40 as my main camera these days.
I have owned many SLRs, starting with a Zenit EM and working my way through Prakticas, Pentax, Canon EOS, Leica 3A and 3F finishing off with Nikon F2 and F3. My favourite film camera was the Nikon F2!
I like the diminutive size of my D40 and the superb results it delivers.

:agree:

The D40 offers everything that you need for quite a bit less.
