Is this a good sarting set up?

If you do a search there are a few threads about these kits, with some feedback from people that have them.

One thing you need to be aware of is that your camera doesn't have the provision to use the cables provided to fire the lights, so you'd either need a hothoe/pc cord adapter, a set of triggers (you'd still need an adapter to use most triggers on a Sony) or to set them off by using the onboard flash on your camera. If you opted for the latter you'd need to check that you can set that to fire manually, as otherwise the ttl pre-flash would trigger the lights prematurely.

Whatever setup you go for the trigger interface is going to be an issue for you as a Sony user, however,to put that kit into context, if you were ti buy the stand, umbrellas etc separately they would probably cost you (retail, with the seller's margin) about £50 which leaves the "value" of the lights themselves at about a fiver each ( so probably about £1-2 ex-works), which should give you an idea of the quality.... ;)

I think I get the picture!! Beggining to wish I had gone Nikon now, Sony is a pain in many ways. :-(

Nowt wrong with Sony, as many here will testify ;)

I see these lights popping up now and then, in my kitchen too lol I've got three of the 250w version
You know what, if your not getting paid, your on a budget and are careful with them they do the job. End of.
Sure they ain't the best quality but hey, what to expect at that price?
If you find yourself a little more flushed with cash later then sell them and move to somethin better but i CAN recommend them and DON'T believe the hype that they are crap.
If you want to go wireless, then a good trigger set would be the hanhel combi tf http://www.cameraworld.co.uk/ViewPr...Hahnel+Combi+TF+Remote&Prod_Code=PON10F000095
Sony compatible too, just make sure you buy the right one

I am not saying its a bad camera but so far I have had to cock arround for hours finding plug ins for most of my spoftware as the Sony does this ARW file instread of RAW, I have had problems finding any equipment, as above that is compatable, the only bonus is the Minotla Lenses I have bought are very good on it and cheap!

RAW isn't a type of file anyway, it's really just raw , as in raw data. ARW is simply Sony's name for their raw files, in the way Nikon call their's NEF, both require the relevant software to open them.

Its no different to any other camera, apart from having their own funny hotshoe.
I checked online and while you don't have a sync socket suitable for studio lights or likewise you can get hot shoe adapters for your camera on ebay for under a Tenner with standard hotshoe and sync socket all in one.
And the raw file busines is nothing out of the ordinary, im an olympus user and they produce ORF files and when i bought my epl1, even though it still makes ORF files my version of camera raw had to be updated. No big deal at all as there are newer and newer cameras made all the time and software developers know this obviously and then provide the relevant updates.

Simon if you have a link to that hotshoe adapt I would be most grateful, I am a total novice at this and I am very wary of buying stuff as I keep getting told 'nope wont fit a Sony'.
