Hi and welcome to TP

I cannot comment on your choice as I use Canon but you will probably find some useful information in the Tutorials and Guides section of the forum

I did:)

It's a very good idea.;)

For around £500 you could pick up the D60 18-55VR kit + a nice Nikor 55-200 as well, that would give you a very versatile platform for most types of photography that you will ititially encounter or wish to pursue.

However the best advice is always to try before you buy, camera's are very subjective, what feels right to one will be hated by another.

You've got the Nikon D40/D40x, Canon 400d/1000d/450d, Sony A200/300/350, Pentax K200d/KM, Olympus 410/420.

Of those personally I've had bad experiences with the Sony's, the entry level Canon's I have had have always had issues with the kit lenses, the Pentax's I have only experienced in 35mm format (showing my age lol) they were always superb quality, however upon reading many reviews of the digi variety, they seem not to score quite as well as those from some of thier competitors.
The Olympus I have no real experience of other than handling them in shops, errrrrmmm, but on that bases alone tis a no from me, just felt cheap and horrible, but do bear in mind what I said about subjectivity.

To summerise get the Nikon, I have heard rumours than Canon owners on average have less friends and can be unnatractive to the opposite sex.;)

Hi Patch,

I have just posted this in a similar thread so here it is cut and pasted to save my typing finger from aching:thumbs:

I would suggest that most of the current mainstream brands would do you fine - ie Nikon, Canon, Sony etc. What you really need to do is go to a camera shop and handle the choices. Although they will all give good quality photo's and have pro's and con's with regard to features it is how they feel in your hand that really matters.

I was dead set on getting a Canon but as soon as I picked up a Nikon it just felt right and that was it.

Remember also that you are buying into a system and if you have some kind of idea where your photography may be heading you can look at the potential costs

Don't also discount second hand. There are some really good bargains to be had if you have an idea of what you want. Have a look at the for sale forum on here for some ideas

I hope that this helps, I upgraded from a P&S to a Nikon D40 last year and have not looked back.

Cool, this is very encouraging stuff. just one more question, What would be the best all round lens. would it be the 18-55mm VR or do i need one with a longer range?

thanks people

like said in most threads for this kind of thing, feel before you buy.
D80's are going very cheap these days due to the release of the D90, but i love mine to pieces, and when i eventually upgrade i will definately be keeping the body as a second
