is this a good deal

I know nothing about Nikon so can't say about the camera, but like most of these kind of 'bargain' do it-all bundles they may look good value but you will outgrow it quickly...

the tripod will be rubbish, the filters are'nt a nessesity, the kit lens is a kit lens and the zoom won't be any good either (at this price!)

Hopefully a Nikon person will come along to elaborate..

You can get a D90 with 18-105 or D5100 with 18-55 kit lens. Both of which are much better than the D3100. You will not get the range of course. But the bodies are so much better.

You can get the D3100 and 18-55 for £430.. are the telezoom, tripod an accessories worth £190? - the telezoom is about £110-120 and probably nothing to write home about, not sure ther rest adds up to £80 of value.

On paper it looks reasonable, but are any of the extras the ones that you would buy if they weren't in the kit?

If depends on your needs. You'll probably struggle to get all that stuff cheaper. Having said that not everything in that bundle is essential. Shop around and run the numbers. Camerapricebuster.co.uk is pretty good comparison site. Amazon have some pretty big discounts at the moment. 7dayshop is the best place I've found for sd card.
Hopefully that helps

Friend of mine has just bought that exact bundle. I haven't said anything to her but that Tamron lens is absolutely awful. Missed focus, hunting and really slow. not sure about any of the accessories that came with it as I didn't see them.

Unless you really need them all right now, why not just get the d3100 and kit lens for much cheaper, then add to it with quality 2nd hand items?

You'd be much better off investing what you have in the kit you actually need rather than buying a bundle deal with things you don't.

And yes, the Tamron lens is pretty crappy, the Nikon 55-200 VR is much better and can be had for around £120.

If I had £650 to buy brand new kit then I'd probably get a D90 + 18-105 kit lens, pretty sure I saw one on John Lewis for £650.

If I were to go second hand I'd probably get a D90, 18-105 and 70-300VR.

The d5100 is an outstanding camera for the price. You can get it with a kit lens for about £550 if you shop around and it is well worth the effort to do so. I got mine, a card and a nasty little bag off Amazon for £590. Pick up a cheap tripod and you're quids in.

Er I would suggest anything but to get a cheap tripod - buy a cheap tripod and you will buy more than twice I can tell you!

Can't wait for my new bit of kit hopefully getting it Friday and I'm gona go out n get some shots n see wot use all think I'm that excited I've not slept n cnt stop thinking of places to shoot

i'd suggest a peruse of MPB and the purchase of a lightly used second hand bargain - you'll get a sight more for your money (they also usually have decent tripods relatively cheap which is a win win imo)

Simply because one the most reliable tripods I've ever used was a £50 Velbon that I got from Amazon knocked down to £16. Incredibly sturdy - even has a hook to hang your bag for extra weight - spare quick release, carry bag: sure, you can't get down to floor level on it, and it doesn't have a ball and socket head but for a walking around tripod you can't beat it. The added advantage is that at that price I was able to buy another for an off camera flash and still be able to treat them both like the gearbox on a rental car :D

The only reason I don't still use it is that I gave it to my brother to use.
