Is there any real difference between the 550D models?

Hey, I'm looking at getting my first DSLR and am very likely to get a 550D for a few reasons but the main one being the clarity available in the video mode and the cameras versatility with action shots.

My main query is what is the difference between the Kiss/2ti and 550D branded models that are available on ebay?

Also what is the failure rate on this model? as the Ebay stores selling the Kiss and 2ti models offer a 3 month guarantee, is the camera likely to fail after this warranty period if undamaged?

Thanks for any help and sorry if I sound like an idiot!

The branding should be the only difference. They are marketed at different countries ie UK and USA.

One thing worth noting is that apparently Canon will not offer a manufacturers warranty for imported (grey) camera bodies. If you buy the non "550D" then this will be classed as a grey import an will not have UK Canon warranty.

I think they are pretty reliable overall, I had a 500D am didn't have any issues, and you don't hear I too many compared with the numbers sold.

AH ok so the only real issue would be getting it fixed in warranty by Canon themselves? That's fine with me as the Sellers all seem to offer a 3 month warranty with them so if there is an issue during this period I would be able to get it sorted fairly easily, the only other issue is that most of them are sold as seller refurbished, does anyone know if they will have actually broken and been fixed or are they likely to be boxed returns?

Where are the sellers based? for their warranty you will need to send it back to them which can take some time and cost a bit. keep an eye out for canon's ebay outlet they often have kit on there and they come with a reasonable warranty.

The grey imports should be a fair bit cheaper than the non imported both new and 2nd had/reconditioned etc just becasue they are grey imports you save your money at the point of buying it.

Be wary of possible customs and duty charges if hey are being shipped from abroad. Grey importers such as bignorman and panamoz will give you a guarantee themselves and also pay the duty.

Yeah I have found a couple of resellers that are UK based, one is in Manchester and the other is in Brighton and both state that there are no import or duty fees with their items, they also both offer 2 day delivery times so the stock must be in the country for that kind of turn around really

Thanks for your help guys I think I'll bite the bullet come payday :) Although if one shows up on AVforums in this timeframe I would be happier getting a UK model with some form of guarantee left on it
