Yes
Hi

Is there any programs out there that will re number the images without doing it manually myself. I will try to explain a bit more. I like to put all my images onto my wesbite. When I shoot a wedding myself and assistant between us use four cameras. Obviously the camera numbers each image. But when there are four cameras on the once they all have been given different numbers once they are on the computer together they are all mixed up. I would like them to appear on the website in order.

So if I move them all to the order is there a program then that will re-number them.

I hope this makes sense to somebody. I really hope someone has the answer as this will save me so much time.

In windows you can highlight them all, right click on the first file and rename, it'll rename it with whatever you wrote, and add a number to the end.

And it is quite quick

I did not know that! I stand corrected.

Thanks for the info! :)

Didnt know that either, learn somthing every day thanks. :)

Also in explorer if you rename the file with a number in parentheses after the name it'll start from that number. So for example, if you select a bunch of files and rename the first one

picture (27).jpg

The next one will be

picture (28).jpg

You can't use zero's (0) though, ie naming a file picture (001) will result in the next one being picture (2) not (002)

Well if you want to save yourself even more time, find a prog that will put them in time order for you. The one that I know of and use is ACDSee. Assuming that the clocks in all the cameras are set to the correct time, in ACDSee just sort by time taken. Then in the same program carry out the rename to whatever you want. Time taken - less than 5 mins.

Lightroom should do the same as well. And I imagine Aperture, though its a long time since I used Aperture.

If list them in time/date order then rename them it *might* renumber them in order of date/time for you.

*not tried it, just seems logical :D

Canon Digital Photo Professional has one of the very best image renaming tool available , and it's free as it came with your camera :)

ckrename is a great wee programme as well.

So far just managed to open up images in lightroom. Any advice on how to re-order them then re-number them. So far I have the images from a wedding but they are all mixed and am still trying to put them in order without re numbering each one. Just got hold of lightroom never used it before but I haven't a clue. Please help!!!!!

I bet its really easy when you know how but I have just spent an hour on there and can imagine spending a few more hours on there before I figure it out.

I know you can renumber when you export - not sure about other times.

Well Miss, as you're about to find out, Lightroom, as good as it is at processing photos, is the absolute worst program ever for managing them. I've had this program since Day 1, and I'm no more knowledgable about it's photo handling than anybody else because I struggled and eventually decided that it wasn't worth the effort. I'm sure there are plenty of people who get along swimmingly with it, but I, like many others, just don't have the time to devote to working it out. I use it for processing only. All the handling is done with the previously mentioned ACDSee. $50 to buy, with a 30 day free trial download. It's probably the best prog for photo management. Others have been mentioned, maybe cheaper and even free, which will no doubt also serve you well.

In answer to your question on sorting by time taken - select Library module. At the bottom of the main larger thumbnails there's a button which says 'Sort' and next to it a drop down menu with 'Capture Time' amongst the options. As for then renaming, I'm winging it here - select all photos then Top menu > Library > Rename Photos and fill in the name/number in box. I've never tried it so practice first on a folder with some test pics in it.

id say the best one is lightroom, can batch process in there pretty well. Hope that helps

:plusone: for Faststone here. Very good for batch renaming, watermarking and resizing.

1) Open up Canon Digital Photo Professional
2) In The Folder View select the directory with your images.
3) Drag the thumbnails into the order you want.
4) Now select All images
5) In the tools menu start the Renaming tool.

There are now several option for you to decide what you want to rename your files, one of them being number by sequence, you can set the start number to start at any number if you don't want wedding001 wedding002 and so on.

It will now run as a batch and bingo all done.

Canon provided you with tools, why not use them ;)
