Hi all

I'm 15 and i don't have job yet, when i'm 16 i will. I was wondering if there is anything i can do now that can get me a little pocket money. I am going to start doing local band photography at fairly cheap prices so people will actually get them done. I was wondering if there is anything else i could do like pets or whatever and how i would go about it. I have a 18-55 kit lens and a 90-300 if it helps

Thanks for viewing

Dave

Edit, excuse my grammar, a genuine mistake

Might be worth writing to or even visiting a few local photographers and see if they would offer you something as an assistant, maybe do 1 day a week at college and get some qualifications in photography

could be a little quiet outside of wedding season though

just an idea - could be worth a try

Get the yellow pages out and do some research as to togs and studios in your area, then send them in a letter asking that you are after work experience etc, you never know it may lead to a paid 'weekend' job :)

I would honestly say go to college or university and pick up what you can, get some qualifications behind you. It does not really matter if you have qualifications or not but if your new its the quickest way to learn and start prouducing a good standard of work which employers will look at.

Thats good advice in my book, although I'd ring them direct and see if you can get and interview or just the ok to visit them. Most employers you'll find will respond well to a young fella like yourself, full off enthusiasm, energy, self driven (thats the important bit) and to them, easily paid ( ie. low wage)
...get yourself a small portfolio of your best work together because they'll want to see that if you get an interview or just the ok to visit.

From the few words I've read of yours, you could do well with this approach.

Good luck.

Well i have managed to get some work experience with a local wedding tog who happens to be in the paper this week as he is shooting some pet parade thing, He is a really nice guy and i will do my first wedding as an assistant in April !!!

Well done that young man!! good stuff Dave. Congrats.

well done Dave, firstly on knowing at such a great age what you want to do, secondly on having the guts to do it.

I am almost twice your age and have only just realised that I have found what I would love to be doing for a living!

so on this subject how would a pro feel about being approached by a late twenty something to be their assistant... I myself am looking to get some experience in photography. just wondered what the polite way of approach would be? would they see someone like this as potential competiton one day? (obviously depends on if you are actually any good of course!)

Congrats on getting a place sorted.

I ran a factory for many years. Sometimes you need more staff but not badly enough to go out and advertise. Even if there was no vacancy at the time I always had time for people that would knock on the door looking for work. Those are the ones that *want* to work and experience showed they were less likely to let you down.

So short version - if you want work/work experience do the normal things but get out there and knock on doors too. Lots of refusals sure, but you will gain experience and confidence just from talking to people...and some might react positively to your determination.

Well done David

It still might be worth tracking down a few studios in your area, as they will more than likely have work through the 'winter' and they might need some help??

thanks JohnB.
Its a tough world! I work already in design so its not too far from my line of work already.
I need to get a portfolio sorted so I have some evidence I suppose?
In my area there are a lot of studios that have been around for donkeys not all with great reputations so the fear of approaching those is nerve wracking. I need to get the confidence of Dave me thinks!.

Hey guys, i disagree with alot thats been said about doing courses etc but im not going to get into arguments. I'm 16 almost 17, i just quit school and in my first 2 weeks off, i got a contract to shoot a companies fashion wear. I have now converted my garage into a studio and shoot for models for extra cash.

My best advice to all young people wanted to do photography is simple.

Get decent lenses. They do make a difference.
Get a portfolio, even if it means getting friends to model for you, and get it online.
Advertise - message your friends all the time about new work, trust me, friends are good at spreading you around.
And lastly, Never give up asking to work with pros.

I messaged over 100 before I met one that took me on. It's hard work no doubt. But figure out what work you want to get into, and persue that.

And! - Don't let people say age is going to hold you back. Your work speaks for you, all you have to do is phone and message people.

**** David - Im traveling up 2 northumberland for a week or so as my sisters bf has a house there, so if you would like me to try and get some work there, so you can help out and learn etc then just drop us an email. Greg@gregrycroftphotography.com please dont pm on here as i tend to only visit when i get the time.****
