Yes
I am a bit confused. My mate just bought an Ipad and he insists that it is an Ipad 4. As far as i am aware there have only been three versions of the full sized Ipad.

Was there an upgrade to the third generation Ipad? I don't think there was. The only upgrade i am aware of is the Ipad mini.

yeah the original iPad 3 was very short lived much to the amusement of early adopters, myself included :)

Yes, the latest iteration was an upgrade to the iPad 3 (or 'New' iPad), effectively making it the iPad 4.

Yes there is im using my ipad 4 now.
There was the original iPad, iPad 2, The new iPad (the iPad 3 with retina display) and now the iPad with retina display (iPad 4) and iPad mini.

Give it 5 minutes....the IPad 5 will be along presently :)

Yep, the newest version of the ipad is the 'new ipad' and is the 4th version of the full sized model. Its got the newer lightening connector which makes it easier to distinguish from the others. Its very similar in specification to the 3, but I think the processing chip is a bit better.

im surprised to hear there is a fourth one out there on sale....

as far as i was aware the one everyone called the fourth one was actually the ipad mini- whats the difference between the 3 and 4 then??? i have even seen the 4 being advertised which is a bit odd the way apple snow people under with there advertising ploys

As my post above, the 4th version has the new lightening connector rather than the standard 30 pin, and it also has a faster processor. The mini is a separate device with a smaller non-retina screen.

Its got the A6 processor as opposed to the A5x in the iPad 3, (makes it a teeny bit faster) also has a improved front camera and the lightning connector on the bottom.

I was not aware that the 3rd generation was upgraded. I guess i was wrong.
I always thought that the latest versions were the 3rd Gen and the Ipad mini.

It is surprising how there wasn't much hype about the 4th generation. Personally i think Apple messed up on the naming of the last few Ipads as it is very easy to get confused. There must be some marketing reason behind it as otherwise they wouldn't have done it.

Yes. The previous iPad was the iPad 3. Now the latest is the 4th generation.

Have placed an order for the iPad 6. :D

The new iPad can be identified by having the new lightning connector like the iphone 5.
The iPad 3 (which also has retina display) had the old style dock connector.

1st generation - iPad
2nd gen - iPad 2
3rd generation - "new iPad"
4th generation - "iPad with Retina display"

The 3rd generation Ipad has retina display.

Apart from an A6 processor (instead of the 3's A5x) it was just an excuse for Apple to give it a lightning connector.

It's more of a corporate change than anything. It's not really a 4th "generation" as a generation would insinuate a substantial change (such as the IPad 3's adoption of the Retina display) which there isn't.

Yes it does, but Apple only called it "new iPad" for whatever reason only known to Apple, they have managed to confuse people with their naming system.

we got my dad an ipad 4 for his retirement/birthday. it's very nice. if you're already in the apple ecosystem, it's a lovely device.

if you're an android boy, i have the nexus 10 which i absolutely adore.... more so than i would an ipad 4 actually - not least because i love being able to play old games with emulators, which has probably worn my poor thumbs out this christmas!

Jim, I think there are a few other "tinkerings" under the bonnet, the iPad 3 had a problem with heat and there were quite a few complaints about how uncomfortable it became from the heat with extended use (if you read somewhere like MacRumours), the new iPad 4 runs totally cool, more like the older iPad 2 even though it has a higher spec processor than the 3.

My 3 has never heated up?

The upgraded from 3 to 4

A5x to A6x

0.3MP standard front camera to a 1.2MP HD camera.

iPad 4 (Wi-Fi + Cellular version) comes LTE enabled. The iPad 3 did come enabled with 4G, however, it couldn't be used in the U.K. The new one will work with our 4G system.

Lightning connector

Price unchanged.

They can't change the price as its not worth a price hike!

The 4g side is academic, as it'll be a couple of years before its affordable to the non business user.

the new naming of the ipad as just Ipad will probably be followed up by microsoft and sony, xbox and playstation will most likely be called just that...(not based on insider tips, knowledge, or anything other than internet gossip)

Can't believe that people hang for the release of the "I" anything.
