Hi all,

Is there a piece of software out there that can 'auto group' photographs. By which I mean that if I have 2000 motorsport photographs, is there software out there that can recognise a car/motorbike and group them all together so I end up with 2000 photographs in sequence by vehicle.

I'm guessing the answer is no, I've looked around and can't find anything, I just think the technology must exist as software like Google Picasa is so good at facial recognition etc.

So apologies if it seems a bit of a daft question and might be far-fetched, but I thought I'd at least ask!

Not aware off any that will automatically identify the car and sort it.

You could use Lightroom 4 to set up a smart collection, which would work, as long as you keyworded your photographs.

Thanks John. I actually have a very manual 'system' of my own which works well but takes a long time. I basically give each car/bike a number of letter, then rename each car/bike to that same letter. Once I've renamed them enough times I get to know the code and can get through a couple of thousand pictures relatively quickly, I'd just love to press a button and allow the software to do it for me, I would pay good money for that :D

Yup there is, at least for athletes with competitor numbers showing. It's how Marathon Photos sort their captures out.

I can't imagine that it'd be cost effective for non commercial purposes though.

PS: I've no idea what it's called, just that it exists. It works on ANPR methodology.

Brilliant, I'll look into this. It is for commercial purposes, I sell my photographs at the track days.

I'd say take a look at LR4 as well, theres a free trial for a month and retails at about £100

Very good dor cataloging images, theres a painter tool, type the meta data text and just click on the images you want associated with that text, nice quick and simple. Can also search images from metadata when image was taken, ie you could select a particular lens

Also some very good tools for importing images and renaming and a developer for image adjustments

EDIT....sorry just read #1 again............. your looking software to auto recognise a number in a image...LR4 will not do that

After a bit of searching I've found a piece of software called 'General Picture Recognition' - http://www.generalpicturerecognition.com/ I've downloaded it and as soon as they sort out my activation code, I'll give it a try! I'm not 100% sure it will do what I want it to, but thought it was worth a go...
