A friend is just getting into photography (just got their first DSLR) and they've asked for software advice. I love Lr, but I think it maybe too expensive for someone starting out, are there any decent alternatives for DAM and basic editing, that would save some money?

I will always recommend Photoscape it's free
It handles basic editing really well, such as levelling, clone tool, colour levels etc, it can convert raw files, you can even do batch editing with it

Thanks all for the quick replies - do any of those include database management (ie, a way of organising photos with keywords etc)?
Thanks, just had a look at a video tutorial on it (lynda). I will point them towards some free trials, see how they get on. I like Lr too much to leave.
