Yes
I have to declare a big disinterest here. I don't like football, it is not interesting enough to spend 90 minutes watching a game.
However, in the 2006 World Cup I happened to see one player who was amazing. I'd never heard of him at the time but what a great display of skill and understanding, he was just outstanding. At the time I recall thinking he is a player that could actually make me watch football.

As the World Cup is about to start and it is almost inevitable that I'll end up seeing some of it. If I do and to spark my interest, is there a current player that is as good as Zinedine Zidane?

Dave

Hard to answer. Players have different attributes, zidane was a great all round midfielder. There are players equally as good but different.

IMO Christiano ronaldo of Portugal so the best in the world. Can win games single handed.

Zidane was the player who masterminded France's World cup win in '98, so at the moment, IMO that puts him above Ronaldo. I never once saw Zidane dive or cheat, so that is another plus point.
I do however think that Lionel Messi is a great player when fit, as are any number of Spanish players - Villa, Iniesta etc.

He was a fantastic player - one of the all time greats.

In today's money you've two players held aloft as the world's best - Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal) and Lionel Messi (Argentina)

Both tend to grab the headlines because of the way they play and the fact that they score goals for fun. Ronaldo is very explosive whilst Messi is a little wizard.

Zidane was more subtle. He oozed class. Calm, composed, strong and seemed to have so much time on the ball.

He could throw a good head too ;)

Phil ,that wasn`t cheating, that was deserved.

I have always thought that Zlatan Ibrahimovich is a superb player. His current strike rate for Pais St Germain is pretty amazing, and if he had played for Brazil or Spain then he would have been a superstar.

He has had a sensational year at PSG, great player to watch.

I am a fan of Bastian Shweinstieger(sp?) and would put him high on the list of current great midfielders

I think that the German team really underperformed at the last World Cup. As you have said, Schweinstieger is a great player, as are Philip Lam and Oezil (forgive the spelling), who has not made an impact in the Premier league.

I'm half french so I'm going to say no ;) . Zidane was just an amazing player - France had a great team at the time, and yes Phil he was also good at heading!

In every generation there are some players who stand out above all others (though typically this is only recognised if they play in Europe nowdays).

During my lifetime of watching football there was Maradona, then Zidane then Messi and Ronaldo. There have been other outstanding players but these for me from the 80s onwards are the only ones that spring to mind - I'd argue the first two arguably slightly ahead of the other two but you can't really compare.

And of course, before the 80s, there were Cruyff and Pele.

Xavi and Iniesta are some players.

Thanks for the replies all. If I see a game I'll look out for those mentioned.

Yes there is, but unfortunately, Scotland haven't qualified for the tournament :D

Ah, but my reply was in total jest ;)
Gareth Bale might have to suffer the way Giggs did in never getting to a WC despite being a top class/rated player.

Yeah I got the 'Jest' part ;) :D

Is a shame that someone that talented probably wont ever get there.
