There is nothing in the same value-for-money range as the 50mm f/1.8. Nothing.

If only there was ..............................................dreaming

sorry the answer is no

Apparently 50mm lenses are quite easy to produce, something to do with the focal length hence the price, for something wide 11-24mm 2.8 you will be looking at big bangers, Tokina do a 11-16mm 2.8 HERE

Look at the old manual focus lenses on Fleabay because with an adaptor you can fit M42 lenses to njust about anything, just a quick look now and there is a takumar 35mm f2,Penatcon 28mm f2.8 and a Vivitar 24mm f2.8 all of which will go for under £50.I have a Carl Zeiss 28mm M42 that I use on the 350D and the results are really good

2nd hand I got a Sigma 24mm 2.8 for about £60 from you know where.

You don't say which mount you need, if it's Nikon, MXV have the following wide angle lenses in their used stock, for very good prices.

A 71403 Nikon 20 f2.8 AF-D (ctg mks r/element) Exc+ 190
D 36807 Nikon 24 f2.8 AF (sm marks) Exc 65
A 71091 Sigma 24 f2.8 S/W II AF Hood Boxed Exc++ 59

Hey guys, NONE of these meets the OP's requirements:

Cheap and fast aren't words that tend to be found together as far as lenses go. For sub f/2 wide optics you'd be talking serious money, although I can't think why would need such a thing

Exactly

^^^ what he said!

Having said that, the Nikkor 28mm f/2.0 is looovely..

Seriously, the only lenses that are currently available new and which fit the OP's requirements (24mm or wider, f/2 or faster, Canon mount) would appear to be:
  • Canon EF 24mm f/1.4 L USM - a lovely lens, but £800+ new
  • Sigma 20mm f/1.8 EX DG - £300ish new
  • Sigma 24mm f/1.8 EX DG - £250ish new
Not a very long list, and none of them cheap. If you're prepared to accept f/2.8 then there is a longer list, but still nothing really cheap.

Wide. Fast. Cheap. Pick any two.

hi gus, sorry i didnt mention that i need a canon mount.

reason i want a fast wide is for low light usage whilst away on my RTW trip next year, for shots out and about at night, sunsets, skys, people in bars and clubs etc etc. so i dont have to use the camrea shot, also so i can attempt hand-held shots.

i now, after reading about on lots of forums realise that a 2.8 is much more achievable, even if its not quite as fast.

ive been looking at the tamron 17-50mm 2.8 as i hear very good things about it.

diddy dave, that would be perfect, where can i find such a thing.

This should do the overall job quite well, particularly if your going around bars as well, closed to 50mm should give you some decent portrait shots, and not to expensive either.

As I'm going all mad and Canon-y in my dotage, my (Nikon fit) Tamron 17-50 might be appearing in the Classifieds shortly.
