Is there a cheap do-it-yourself way to take my camera underwater?

I was thinking if I could wrap and seal it in 2 transparent nylon bags. Would there be a risk of water still getting in? Is there a website that provides instructions? Are there any specific nylon bags for the purpose? Would appreciate any advice.
 
My advice would be to buy an underwater housing.
 
I checked and couldn't find the one for my camera: Canon PowerShot A720. Are there generic ones I can buy which would work on my camera?

They are pretty expensive new, you would probably be better off buying a second hand one from ebay or just buying a second hand camera and housing for probably less than £50 for an older model.

The other option is something like THIS.

but it will only work to 5m if at all.

Yes, that's the one. But you are right. It is pretty expensive.
 
I would be tempted to buy something that is certified as waterproof as oppose to making your own, i stumbled across this website a couple of months ago and could be perfect for you :) This is the link to a specific camera one, but if it's not big enough they do bigger generic bags that you may get away with. I haven;t used any of these things by the way, but they certainly seem to do the job!

I bought a canon D10, just for taking images underwater whilst on holiday, and for use on the beach. Works surprisingly well...

Thanks andy for the link. Nice photos Byker28i. I was also thinking about buying that waterproof camera, having seen it in a Canon catalog. So thanks for the sample shots! There's now also the D20 & the D30.
 
Only thing I've got against the D10 is the limited zoom and it looks childish, but it's hardened against drops and works great underwater. D20 and D30 have better looks it appears.

:plus1: I have a simple over-board bag with the glass/plastic lens extension and it works very well, about £16 as I recall.
