Is the Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG a reasonable wedding lens ?

Yes
Working towards my first small wedding in a few months time. One thing i'm lacking is a fast short zoom lens for indoor low light pics. Naturally there are better more expensive options available to me but would this sigma work well with a D90 body (soon to purchase) ?

I'm guessing it doesn't have any AF motor in the lens so not much use with my D40...i wont be manually focussing on the day !

Will have a quick look on flickr to see what sort of results it yields.

TIA,
Mike.

So do I, it's not as quick or quiet as the Canon but optically it's fine. I'd like mine to be a little quicker to grab focus but it's 8/10 from me.

Thanks guys - it sounds encouraging and married (excuse the pun) with the D90 i believe it will hopefully perform admirably.

24mm on a DX body for me won't be wide enough as a wedding workhorse. I'd be looking at the Tamron 17-50mm unless you want to splash on the Nikkor 17-55mm.

are there are other contenders you had in mind as a comparison? and whats the one thing it has to do really well?

I think it just needs to be sharper and faster than the D90 kit lens which i'm hopefull it will be. The extra zoom is a bonus but would prefer it to be wider if I had the choice. If I need the 18mm wide shots i'll use the D40 as outdoors the speed wont be an issue. Ideally i'd like a reasonably priced lens that will work well in most situations during the day. I've a 55-200 & 50mm fast prime for some alternative options and the D40 with it's kit lens for backup. The D90 and the sigma F2.8 should be the workhorse for the event though.

But you're still buying a lens that has a focal lens designed for full-frame and using it on 2 DX bodies. It makes no sense to me.

A 17-50mm f2.8 IS the 24-70mm for DX.

I have a 17-55 Nikon, works well and is sharp.

I needed another zoom of similar range,Andy...AKA Puddleduck...., raved about the Tamron 17-50 F2.8,after a pm conflab.....,I bought one and think it is optically as good as the 17-55.It is also a lot smaller and lighter, which suits Mrs Frac down to the ground...............:naughty:
