Is the memory technology in 32, 64, 128GB SD cards reliable these days?

Personally I wouldn't trust an sd card as a computer drive, it's just not designed to be used that way. Most card reader ( even internal ones ) use the USB headers so it's not going to be particularly fast either (unless you know for a fact it uses 3 in which case I'd still be inclined to find out if it utilises the speed). You may as well buy a USB external drive.

what speed is your network, even HD shouldnt be saturating a LAN.

Since the cards are basically just backups that are going to be accessed relatively frequently and won't be the only place the films/photos/music is stored, I would say it's worth a punt. IIRC, SanDisk have a pretty good warranty so one of their cards should be good for 30 years ( http://www.sandisk.co.uk/about-sandisk/warranty-and-user-guides/warranty-table/ ) and at a guess, SDXC will be an obsolete storage medium by then!

Reliable and fast will be an issue.

How big is your hdd? Ghosting fakes about 2-3hours and ghosting and replacing with a 1tb drive will solve all your issues.

An external HDD will be faster and more reliable

youre not going to get SSD performance from an SD card though so you may as well just increase the mechanical drive size (or go fusion).

to answer the question.. no in my opinion. ive seen and heard of too many card failures.

I use a 64GB micro SD in my surface pro for general storage. Convenient for copying stuff from NAS too
