is the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS a major improvement on the Sigma 70-300 APO?

Im thinking of upgrading to this lens since its around the £170 mark for a new one.

Is there a major improvement?

I would say YES, having just bought one for my better half to replace just that very same lens, but I can't prove it with pics because I am not at home. Sorry, but if you do a search for the canon lens you will find examples of what it can do.

I would also say yes having just purchased one myself to replace that very lens :p

Theres a 16+ page thread on it over at a POTN, I would suggest checking it out.

Not the sigma lens but the canon 70 300 comparisson.

Taken last evening at approx 75 feet, both lenses at their maximum.

Here is one from my 55-250mm, the picture is cropped from the original.

Pic was at 250mm

Wow, looks like there is a LOT of difference.

I guess I need to find where I can get one.

7dayshop have them in I think, or they did last week. There's also Kerso.

I'm trying to locate one myself. 7dayshop - on order, Warehouse Express - on order ( Canon Stock Problems ) Jessops - 500 on order.

Figured I'd use an existing thread to keep this info together.

I'm looking at getting out to some motorsport events this year and would ideally like to spend £200 on something to give me a bit more reach.

The only two options for me are the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS and the Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO Macro DG. Now, I've heard that the Canon is slow to focus but the comparison of the two above by cowboy has pretty much convinced me that the Canon is going to produce far superior images to the Sigma. I'm just a little concerned about the focusing speed.

I may also use it for some wildlife so presumably the IS is a major benefit of the Canon too?

I have recently bought one from www.camerabox.co.uk

They are in stock at £184.99 inc. VAT plus Next Day Delivery: £4.99

Bargain!

Not used mine much yet but will do soon. I only buy stuff if the reviews are really good from the people who actually use the stuff.

Nifty Two-Fifty, I like it :lol::lol:

Good find Craft.

Most of the images I've posted have been shot with the 55-250 IS, I very rarely have the kit lens on the camera. I've used it at Goodwood for both motor racing and air displays and never had a problem with the focusing speeds there (unless someone stood up in front of me as I started to pan and that totally threw the focus out).

Lovely images jgs001, the last one in particular. Glad to hear you have no problems with the focusing speed. I'm going to order it in about a week here when Kerso gets back to me with a price :)

For things like birds coming towards me the focus speed just can't manage it, but equally I think that's probably a tough job for any lens. The last one wasn't auto focus... I couldn't get the hoverfly on the focus point long enough, this was manual focus and me moving backwards and forwards to get it...
