Hi all, is the Canon EF 50mm f1.8 MK2 worth the grand sum of £83.95?

The results I've seen on Flickr seem pretty good. I'll be using it on a Canon EOS 60D.

Thanks
Steve

Considering its considered one of the best lenses for the money then that would be the worlds biggest YES. :)

I use my 50mm 1.4 on my 60D 90% of the time. I had the 1.8 before and it was just as good.

Best bang for buck prime on the Market. Get it and give it a go. Even if you end up selling it you won't lose much.
But you'll learn plenty....

Go get it and learn from it. If you are happy with the focal length and in time the slow focusing and plasticky feel ubothers you, you can sell it and get the 50 f1.4 .

Cool thanks everyone, gonna pick one up tomorrow. I'll post some results once I've had a play with it.

Cheers
Steve

I use one on a 60D, excellent value for money for superb results.

Agree with everything above - absolutely superb value for money and a very good little lens . . .

BUT (and sorry to be the only one to say this)

. . . what type of photography do you intend using it for?

If it's not going to suit your purposes, no matter how good value for money it might represent it'll still be a waste of your hard earned ;)

Go for it, its a great lenses but I would say don't fall into the trap of shooting absolutely everything at 1.8 remember lenses are sharpest stopped down a stop or two and this is very true of the (very reasonably priced) 50mm 1.8s

Also if you're going from a kit lens that has a maximum apeture of 5.6 say then you might find it takes a while to get the focus bang on at 1.8, you'll find you have to be quite precise with where you focus because of the shallow DOF, but you'll quickly get the hang of it!

Yeah but but remember, why shoot at 1.8? Because you can. ;)

I'm with Sarah here, to me it was a total waste of money, yes it's good value, but only if it's a lens you will use.

A bargain is only a bargain if it's something you want.

Agreed. Quite fast, cheap and punches well above its weight; but too long/short on a crop camera for me. I still have my old Nikkor f1.4 50mm and use it on the F2 and FM, but it doesn't work for me on a 30D. I'd rather have something in the 30mm - 35mm range for a walkabout prime.

Mine was well worth the £80 it cost just for the ability to take low light pics of my daughter indoors. Build quality isn't great, but so far it has stood up to all I've thrown at it.

I use this lens a lot on my 60D exactly as has been described.

Indoor pictures of the kids/grandkids under low light when they visit.

Without it I wouldn't get any useable pictures.

My "nifty fifty" has already saved my bacon!!!

My girlfriend's sister used to run a baby sensory group (happy clappy cr4p for babies under a year old) and wanted me to get some shots of the special Christmas Edition......

The hall she'd hired for it was very badly lit with stip lights, had a very high ceiling and the curtains were closed.

So there was no natural light, my sigma 18-200mm just wasn't fast enough and I didn't want to be pointing my flash straight at the babies so I switched to the nifty fifty, set the aperture to around f2.3 and managed to get some nice shots :)

I also used it to get some shots of a friend's baby in the bath.

Just purchased a 60D and canon 50mm f1.8 (off Kerso - fully recommend him if your buying the 50mm or anything)

I'm new to photography, here are two results:

Also my friend came with, he has a Sony and is on this forum. He also purchased a 50mm off Kerso and was also impressed with it:

That's me :D ^

mine arrived today (from Kerso) been having a quick play and am very impressed up to now

got my 50mm 1.8 off here 2nd hand, hardly taken it off my 60d since. But remember because of the crop factor it's more like 75mm so a bit tighter

Loved it at least until I got the 85L. Now with the 24-70L and 85L I just didn't use it, so it's been sold on.

Great value for the money though.

Ahh to have those two lens, i would do terrible things for them. But for now 50mm will do me good

Lovely lens. I don't use it much any more as my 17-55mm f/2.8 has pretty much replaced it with a more flexible focal length and only a bit slower but I will break the 50mm out again sometime soon I think :) Got shots like these with it:

(although this was with flashes, it was f/5 and crazy sharp)

And this was at f/1.8

I say go for it, even if you don't use it too much you will learn a load from it and then be able to resell and get most of your money back.

I love mine, it's amazing value, but it is very plasticy.

Here's one of my first shots with it.

Bought mine with the camera off amazon, so cheap and wanted to play around with really shallow DOF, main reason I wanted a dslr in the first place.

I got mine yesterday and had a play with it last night, taking pictures of my cats. I love the DOF on it, it's way beyond anything I've used before. Looking forward to getting some more interesting pictures with it in the coming weeks.
