Yes
I used to love my sigma 30mm 1.4 but when I went full frame I had to sell it. Now I'm thinking about in the future getting the 35mm L 1.4 obviously the focal range will be a real 35 instead of effective 50+ but how does this lens compare to the sigma 30mm, which i found to be so amazingly sharp

Joe,

I ‘currently’ have both of these lenses and I have attached a few comparison shots I took the other day, a very quick and dirty test, done in the kitchen, I placed the subjects straight in front of the window to deliberately get a high contrast effect and to see how both lenses fared with chromatic aberration which I have found prevalent with the Sigma.

Putting it simply, the Canon does to me have the edge and although some reviews say its soft at F/1.4, I have not as yet noticed it or been bothered by any issues, I will however probably err on the side of the Sigma, purely because its smaller and lighter and thus easier on my injured arm.

The Canon appears brighter more evenly across the frame, and suffers less overall with chromatic aberration, build quality on the Canon is as they say, addictively excellent, the Sigma does pick up more chromatic aberration in moderate use which is irritating but correctable, but both are great sharp lenses.

You can see the original cropped photos for a better and easier comparison by clicking here:

Photo 2 – these are a 100% crop of the centre section of the ingredients of a bottle and the Canon is more than acceptably sharp..... You can see the original complete shot by following the link above.

Hope this helps, if you get one, you will not be disappointed.

Haven't tried the Siggy, but the 35L is a good excuse to get a full frame body. "But I just HAD to get another camera luv! Have to make full use of the lens I've got don't I"?
35mm on a full frame, its a classic combination (Think M6 and Summilux). Wide enough to get a bit extra in yet not so wide as to not use as a standard/walk around. It just doesn't seem to give me the same ......WOW as my 24mm f1.4Lii on a crop does, even though they equate to a similar effective focal length. Some thing to do with the way their designed and "Draw" differently perhaps.

Thanks folks, looks like it is as good so will make it onto my want list for the future

I've had the Sigma 30mm F1.4 and also had use of the 35L for a while.

I never really got on with the Sigma for some reason - but the 35L - perfect. It may be quite a way off but that lens is definitly on my wish list.

I love my Siggy 30mm 1.4, partly because it's a nice compact little thing but of course it's useless for full frame and that's a shame as that 35mm L is a lot more money.

That's not a really relevant comparsion though, not compared to the 35L on full frame. It will absolutely blitz the little Siggy because of the image area is 2.5x larger. And as you say, a like for like comparison would be a 50mm f/1.4.
