is the 7d really that bad?

This needs to be resized down to about 33% on each dimension to look sharp. That leaves us with effective 2MP resolution. Ouch, that's a very strong NR.
Except you don't know if that bit is actually within the DoF when at that size....

It would better be, or we also have a focusing problem for whatever reason

Really? what assumptions are you using for calculating DoF?

That's a really interesting link.

Think all this proves that it really is a crap camera, only marginally better than the plastic xxxD range that break at the drop of a hat

I must be doubly unlucky, use my 7D with the dust sucking 17-55mm that is also of flimsy construction.

Might just as well pack it all in until I can afford something better.

The problem with a thread like this is that all types of togs have input ranging from basic users to pro users... so whilst you are mocking some of the opinions on here you're actually just as bad as those you are mocking by making out that the issues discussed are trivial, when in fact they are just trivial to you. Some of us actually have the pressure of delivering images to clients in dark conditions where noise IS an issue as it leads to more post production work and hassle.

So maybe before making sarcastic comments you should take all possible uses in to consideration first?
