Bandwidth/servers costs money too. 600MB isn't exactly a small download either.

Ta for that. :)

You would think the download would be cheaper anyway, regardless of VAT, seeing as they don't physically need to produce and send you a disc. Unless you needed the program instantly, I don't see the benefit of the download if they are not passing on the savings to the user.

The cost of a disc is negligable anyway, the retail price of software isn't affected by the delivery/storage method (although you often have to pay for postage).
The price reflects the development costs and the abilities the software gives over it's rivals... If companies pay £600 for a professional bit of kit then they obviously think it's worth it.

Use GIMP. It does everything photoshop does and is free. There are very good free plugins as well, specifically:
High Pass Filter
Wavelet Denoise
UFRAW (which can remove lens distortion)

They can do a lot of what Photoshop can do, but not everything. ;)

Free is good though. ;)

Other than that you can't use it for commercial use, or take advantage of upgrade pricing.

As i've posted before on more than one occasion, i wasted a whole year on GIMP, the UFraw plugin was just plain awful, you couldn't get a 'natural' looking shot using curves.
I bought Elements 8 off ebay for £40 nearly a year ago and it's worth every penny, it's a bit like buying steak after eating tripe !

Photoshop is a pro tool, and as a pro I want to use the best, so yes it's always worth it, and will be getting the upgrade to CS5.5 next week but if you do not have the available cash, or do not make money from photography/graphic design then it definately is not worth getting the latest version.

Two ways of getting good deals, are as a student of course and purchasing legit but older versions of Photoshop (say CS3).

Other than that, I'm sure that PS elements or Corel (whatever the latest version is) is suitable for most people. Of course you could just buy Lightroom and do most things with that.
