Is now a bad time to buy a Canon 5D mk 2?

Just wondering if there is any substance to the rumoured mark 3? If so then mark 2 prices will drop so should I hang on?

there have been rumours since about 3 months after the Mk2 came out

every day longer is a day closer to the Mk3 - how much further to go is anyone's guess?

I spent months waiting for the nikon d800 to appear...I just got over it and couldn't be happier. There is always going to be the next best thing.

rumours abound clicky

■32mp
■ISO 100-25600 (L1, H1, H2, H3)
■DIGIC V
■4.2fps
■19point AF
■CF Card
■Slightly larger LCD (new ratio)
■New autofocus while filming, performance unknown.
■All the standard video stuff.
■RAW video still unknown

Mother of God. I want it!!!!!!!!!!!

Along with a 1 peta-byte hard drive :)

When you get it,can i borrow it.:p:D:lol::wave:

I've decided to hang on for a 5D3. However long that may be as I plan to keep it until the 5D5 comes out, so I'll get a good 6+. Yrs service. At the momentum I'm happy with my 7D.

Best save your pennies then - I would be surprised if the 5D3 when it does come out is close in price to the 5D2.

And the rest.

It might be a bad time to buy a 5D as (as pointed out above) you might not be able to find a 5DII in stock and if/when the new one comes out I wouldn't like to be first in the queue given Canon's recent record of not getting cameras right on day one. Plus of course you may pay way over the odds if you're an early buyer.

32mp LOL and the point is?

Seriously unless you shoot high end fashion for glossy mags and need to crop half the image away before printing a double page spread where is the benefit exactly? Even the D3x is wasted res for most people who rarely print larger than 8x10.

My guess is it depends on your level of expertise, but the 5D MkII is an outstanding camera in every respect, and you wouldn't be sorry to buy one.... The MkIII is only a rumour so far....

Well, 32mp is pretty close, I'd imagine, to the quality you'd get from medium format film scanned at 3-4K dpi, so there's that.

So megapixels are for experts? Glad I shoot the D3 then its only got 12.1mp, must be a learners camera. I'm surpised I can get a usable shot out of the hopeless thing

I don't want more mp stick with 21. Will have next to no noise at high ISO. just improve the af and fps

Exactly, which is why the D3 is such a low noise beast in low light. Less pixels equals bigger photosites which means lower noise. The extra res is all well and good in a studio where you can add plenty of light or shots where you can use low ISO like using a tripod and longer exposures, but for me the low noise benefits far exceed having extra res.

If they could get the noise down at higher res then all well and good, but its only really needed if you print at very large sizes.

Beat me to it, who really ever needs 32mp??
I've never ever needed more mp than my camera, except when I used to shoot sport on a NC2000.
I've used a 1ds mk3 for the past 3 years, every file I have sent to clients has been resized down from around 16mb to 3-4mb.

If the new 1ds or 5dmk3 has a stupid amount of mp then it looks like I'll be sticking with what I've got.
All I've ever wanted from Canon is a 8fps full frame 16-18mp, something they don't seem to want to give us.

I would be happy with 32mp for landscape and wildlife use (for cropping), as long as the pixels remain sharp, without extra noise increase. That would also mean a new MBP with at least 8GB or 16GB RAM, as my current 4GB (max allowed) hardly cuts it with 16MP files.

To answer the OP's question, I'd wait slightly longer unless there is an urgent need for 5DII now for some specific work. Chances are 5DII production line is crippled, and with stocks running low they will rebuild for 5DIII if anything. Cheaper primes are likely to be updated too. So I would wait and it should be something excellent. I am 80% set to get one.

Canon have been doing a lot of work on new larger sensors! And the slightly larger screen, ( new Ratio), part is very interesting?? Don't you think?

All supposition but 32mp on a slightly larger sensor at the same pixel density as mkII and 19point AF system...:thumbs:;)

I too think Canon are working on something special, and different. They want to dominate the entire market, from compacts though MILCs to DSLRs.

They also have their eyes on the medium format market, which they could attack with a new format camera using their current lens range. Shake up the 1D series cameras.

For example, a sensor 32x32mm would have 18% more area than 24x36mm full frame. Or any other permutation like the more square MFT/compact format, bearing in mind that a lot of professional images have the long ends cropped off anyway. Maybe a rotating sensor, instead of turning the camera - that would be nice

I think the time might be right for a bit more revolution than evolution. Could be a giant MILC, maybe shutter-less with a switching sensor like most compacts

And the relentless march of the megapixels will continue. IQ is surely about more than pixels, but every time we get more of those, we also get more of everything else too, and less noise.

As for a 5D3, or whatever it might be called, even if it's announced tomorrow you won't be able to buy one for three moths and it'll be full price (probably a much higher price) for months after that. Which brings us to this time next year. I'd get a 5D2 now.

Hmmm.

So basically I'm right? Yet again the update from Canon looks like being more mp's and a bigger screen? Again? Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaawn.

I thought that the 5D was an amateurs camera? Do amateurs need so many mp's? And how big a screen does anyone need? I'm an amateur and I feel overlooked by Canon, they don't make a single camera I'd want to buy :shake:
