Is my kit suitable for Brands Hatch?

No
Mrs A has just bought me a photo academy course at Brands Hatch for my Birthday, and I'm not sure I have anything suitable to wear ( round my neck!).
I ditched my DSLR's a few years ago in favour of M43 ( currently with an Olympus OMD E-M1) and am wondering if this will be suitable, with the correct lens, or should I let Mrs A treat me to some new kit?
I prefer smaller cameras, if a DSLR is thought to be best, which one to go for and of course, lens choice for either my Oly of something else.
Need to strike quickly while Mrs A has her purse open.........!
And of course, although I love Motorsport, I will need to use it for other stuff.

A dslr *should* be better at panning but having said that, I had one quick try with my em10 and it was ok. The speed of the car was considerably slower than anything at Brands

In my experience, the EVF is the issue with my camera but the em1 is considerably better. Having said that, I can't wait til spring when I'll use it for drag racing. Personally, I'd relish the challenge of using the OMD

Whether you wish to take advantage of Mrs A is your choice ;)

That's a nice shot, thanks for the info. What lens were you using?

Not sure of the capabilities of your camera, but theres several places where long shots are good, and several areas of the course where you can get quite close to the action. I suppose it depends where they take you.

For Brands Hatch with a x1.6 crop DSLR you need something covering the 70-300 range. Use that to help choose which lenses for your camera.

I don't know how good the continuous AF modes are on M43 cameras, but I've seen some great shots from these cameras, although I don't know the failure:keeper rate.

I would say with the right lens range you'll be fine at Brands Hatch, there's plenty of places to get close, and even with the telephoto shots you don't need a ridiculously long lens to get great shots.

E-M1 and 40-150 f2.8... End of. :D Might aswell make the most of the purse being open and buy the most expensive lens available. Will go well with your 12-40 Alan. (y)
Thats why I love this forum, I was looking for a way to get the 40-150.
And while the purse is open, it would be rude not to argue for the TC to go with it...............

I think the lens is confirmed!

Thats a cracking shot Simon.
For the last couple of years, people have been knocking m43 cameras for not having fast enough AF and discounting these new mirrorless cameras as not good enough for pro use or anything more than snapshots. I think shots like yours show m43 easily performs as well as a good dslr.
I really want to use my EM1, Davids comments about the 40-150 f2.8 makes me think that I will be ok with it. I am hoping to get the lens soon, then its down to the nearest motorway to practice.......

Give you 20 quid for it if it turns out to be an unsuccessful purchase ;)

Hmmm.... I feel bad now in case it's a turkey... I don't own it or any m43 gear. If it fails I'm not responsible. And tbh I didn't actually make any comments. :D

Check out mu43 and look at the lens thread for the 40-150 f2.8. Plenty of nice shots in there!

Don't worry, I just needed encouragement to buy one. Been looking at DSLR's ( Nikon D7100 or D810) and the cost of that with a decent lens is probably double the cost of a 40-150, so I suppose I will be getting the cheapest option. I looked at some sports shots taken with the lens and it all looks pretty good to me. TBH, I will be learning the technique and getting a day trackside at Brands Hatch. I don't want a huge camera getting in the way!

.....but now I just had a play with a 70D in Currys .........,,

I think I will stick with what I have, a DSLR will be just the start of a new GAS. Camera, new lenses, flash, new bag to carry it all in, more batteries.............
I'll just get the new lens

theres the new oily red dot hotshoe thing, something like that or the old Russian turret viewfinder which is actually decent, would be good and help with tracking and shooting
