Ok guys im thinking of clearing out my garage and set up a small studio in there, just need some advice as if its big enough, as i dont wanna spend time doing it then find out ive wasted my time, the garage is 2.5m wide / 2.1m height / 4.5m lenght, as for shooting i will only be shoot 1 person at a time maybe 2 max.

Thanks

should be fine as long as you know what its limits are, but only you can tell that when you start using it,

Thanks for the reply, What colour would you recommend to paint the walls? white or a mid grey?

Thanks.

what type of backrounds will you be using, also i would paint white or are you going to be using the wall as backround if so grey.

i will be hanging my white vinyl backdrop from the ceiling to cover the door, so would you still go for painting the walls ect white, im just wondering if the stray light will be bouncing all over the place if all the walls are white?

Sorry for been cheeky but do you get alot of business through your website?

ok thats cool, and white should be fine so should grey just depends what you want, also i only started my buisness a couple months before christmas, and my site has brought me some work but not as much as facebook does,

Any studio space is by definition about 6 inches smaller than you need in at least one key dimension.

Height's your main issue but I bet it will be fine.

Yes Andy, you’re right. If you paint the walls white they will just chuck the light all over the place, making it just about impossible for you to totally control the lighting.
Paint the walls and ceiling black, or use black drapes.

Good luck

I've painted my a mid grey with Garage floor paint (the matt stuff not gloss). Also use your back wall to hang the background, that way you can open the garage door and walk further back if you need to (I found out the hard way).

thanks steve, trouble is i have a work bench at the other end of the garage so this is not possible, so does the grey paint work well.

Just an idea but in my little studio I have the walls white and got a load of black material from the market and pinned up so now if I need the light to reflect I can just move the material where I need to but don’t have light bouncing all over the place.

I have a workbench also, I just allow the background to drop in front of it, and it allows me to hide all the tools too. Opening the garage door gives me the opportunity to shoot full or 3/4 length shots.

The Grey paint is great. Better than white, but not as dark as black, meaning that I can work with a single 40w tungsten bulb at one end. If I tried to do that with black walls I think it would be far too dark.

The problem I have with my garage this time of year is that it's just too cold as it's at the bottom of the garden rather than on the side of the house.

LOL mine also is at the bottom of the garden, im going to start clearing it tomorrow :D

Andy dimension wise you should be fine, you will be best to fix the vinyl background to the wall, using brackets and the vinyl can be custom cut to fit the width.

If you are going to be shooting babies I would suggest some heaters for during the winter, the warmer the better for sleepy shots.

Facebook is definitely worth spending the time on, earlier in the month I did one baby shoot and their NCT pals saw some teaser images and I had four further bookings just from them initial images. Word of mouth spreads fast and networking really does help get your name out there.

Good luck with the build.

Yes thanks things are going great with me, January is looking as busy as the run in to xmas so can't complain, bookings through to March at the moment and the wife has gone part time. I have just got a replacement D700 and 85mm 1.4 so want to do more moody work and mix it up a little and also offer a lot more location work in the summer for variety.

Good to see things have moved on for you, onwards and upwards.

I have off white walls on one side but with a large patio window partly on the other side which is great for doing natural baby/maternity shots, covered by a large roller blind but I mainly use softboxes, having said that I have been thinking about changing the walls so I can use them for other shots, rather than iron the black muslin, be it fancy wall paper for makeovers or neutral, still undecided. For the floor I have laminate down and bring the white vinyl roll down to cover it for high key work.

Have fun tomorrow, that is one job I need to do sort out the garage, but keep on putting it off lol.
