Is my drill dead?

Yes
So I was just drilling into what I believe to be a concrete lintel. Dark grey dust was coming out of it. I was using my Hitachi SDS drill to drill an 8mm hole and the drill was making easy work of it.

Then bang! (actually a soft sort of noise), the ring main trip blew and smoke came out of the back of the drill. Reset the trip and just touching the trigger on the drill blew it again. More smoke out of the trigger area.

Fixable or time for a new one?

More than likely it is the cable going in to the drill.
They quite often become damaged and short out.
Open the drill up, unplugged of course!, and have a look.
It's easy to strip back to undamaged cable.

Thanks I'll take a look.

I bet it wasn't a good idea to keep lowering the drill to the ground using the cable.....

LOL

Still, it was cheaper than keep dropping it off the top of the ladder onto a porcelain floor.

I was a sparky in a previous role, C&G 15th ed, and one of the options to a question on the multi choice paper asks, if the support where the wire goes into the drill is there so you can lower the drill to the ground using the cable, I kid you not :)

Hands up anyone who hasn't done it though :)

Next question: what kind of stupid company uses a modified version of torx to hold their drills closed? Bosch.....

I might need a new drill (hmm, wonder if there's already a thread about that........)

I have the right bit :)
You're too far away to throw it to you though.

If you had bought a decent one to start with...

IIRC Electrolux use their own special fasteners so repair men have to buy the specific tool for the job.
