Hi folks,
I am getting back into photography after a bit of a break and need some advice regarding lightroom. I have been shooting in JPEGs recently and intend to start using RAW again.

I need to buy software to help me with the following
Sharpening pictures
Noise reduction
Cropping
Ability to use plug ins like the nik plugins + alienskin software plug ins
General tweaking like increasing saturation, converting to black and white etc.
Changing white balance/exposure

I was thinking of buying Lightroom 3 as it's cheaper . Do you folks think Lightroom will be ok for my needs or do I need to consider photoshop CS versons ?

Any comments/advice/suggestions will be appreciated.

Regards

K

Lightroom will do all of those but unless it's something I have over looked, the plugins you mentioned are specific to photoshop.

:agree: Why don't you download the Lightroom trial from the Adobe site and try it out.

I'm not sure if alien skin will work with LR, I know some of them will but don't think they all will.

Dear all , thank you for replying to my post.I'll try the trial version and then decide if I need the plugins.

I starting using lightroom about 6 months ago and have honestly only used photoshop 1-2 since, it does everything I need it to do. I have only used photoshop to clone out unwanted objects. Are you using a PC or Mac, because you could buy Aperture for mac from the download store for £44..

Unless you plan on doing any really serious editing, using layers etc Lightroom should be more than adequate. And compared to Photoshop it is a bargain.

I use a PC Adam.

all you mentioned above are properly handled by LR! the last version is even better for noise reduction.
im personally working 100% LR, much easier and quicker to work on pictures

I find I can do a large percentage of the day to day editing in Lightroom, but I make the round trip to photoshop for things like cloning and serious "tweeking" I find the cloning/healing in LR a poor substitute and the lack of layers and proper curves limiting, especially layers and blend modes

I had a brief play with an older version of lightroom 2.7 and photoshop cs3 (not mine). I found the CS3 version quite easier for PP than Lightroom. I dont know whether it's because this was the first time I used LR,I have used photoshop CS2 quite a while ago.

I think the whole format of LR is very new and different to me compared to photoshop. So wondering whether to persevere with LR or just go down the photoshop route.

I have been using Lightroom for the past 4 years and have to say that the new Lightroom 3 is fantastic. I also have Photoshop CS5 but find myself rarely using Photoshop other than to remove unwanted items in my photos. Lightroom 3 even has a new noise reduction feature which, although may not be as good as some of the expensive plug-ins for Photoshop, is still a very good addition for Lightroom and is included in the price of the package.

hi folks, any recommended links for lightroom tutorials ? Would like to try lightroom for some more time before giving up.

Lightroom is the programme for picture editing - photoshop mey do some of it but it will take 10 times as long.

Any websites for lightroom lessons you can recommend/suggest Andrew - I find lightroom quite daunting.

To get the most of out lightroom, watch the introduction tutorials. Don't worry about the version number for tutorials as the are very good about teaching the overall idea about lightroom. It's a cataloguing system, with very good editing, printing, etc etc

you can get the trial and read (even watch) tutorial. im very pleased with the interface really ergonomic and the numerous post processing possibilities
