Would this not count as Fair Use coming under the criticism or review exemption? Genuine question - I'm not clear on this part of copyright law! :)

Ahem, watch the video (the first 2 seconds or so will do), look at the picture, spot what's wrong.....;)

No idea. But Ken sounds as if he's taken an xtc suppository.

I think his front-page image is simply mirrored.

yep, deliberate or not, who knows

As well in the video he goes on about how people who use telephoto lenses are not very good at photography and theres no need. Yet in that photo there hes holding a telephoto.

well hes entitled to his view..... albeit a stupid one:lol:

You kinda have to give him a lot of credit. I don't read his stuff so I can't comment on the content really but I do know I spout heaps of pish and I'm not world famous for it.

ooh never heard of Ken Rockwell before today......

I think unfortunatley for him he doesnt come across great in his video - like an easily distracted child in a toy shop!! (In fairness I'd be acting like that too - looking at one thing for a few seconds then going ooooh look at that one! - difference being I wouldnt be doing it as a promo vid!)

Had a look at his web site - wont be looking again he does seem to spout some nonesense!!

Has anyone read his piece called "Film: The Real Raw"??

Wonder what anyone elses take is on his pearls of wisdom such as:-

"Software companies lie when they claim files are "digital negatives." They do this to help addict you into the raw cult fetish. Raw files are just unborn JPGs; they have no significant additional data. "

"Shoot real raw (film) or JPG like a man, and you always can see your pictures without even needing a computer. "

"Real Raw needs no noise reduction.
Details and textures are always crisp and clear on film."

I do like the last one, "Real Raw (he means film) needs no noise reduction." then you take a look at his gallery.........

Still each to their own I suppose, but I'll think personally I'll be following advice on here rather than Mr Rockwells web site!

Don't be ridiculous. What kind of argument is this?

Obviously your first statement was a joke, but what has his camera got to do with this?

Ken's reviews can be useful but take his emotions and opinions with a bag of salt.

I've never seen him produce an interesting photo yet, so don't know how qualified he is to do anything other than weigh, measure and shoot test charts in his reviews.

All he shoots are over saturated, 80's looking road sign snaps, and totally unartistic happy snaps of his kids and nuclear family.

Is he having a laugh......... yes. He says don't take everything seriously on the site.

See section About of his web site:

"This site is provided only for the entertainment of our kids and our dogs."

"Please don't believe anything you read anywhere on this website. Although most of the technical information is probably true most of the time, the rest is all pretend. I love to fool around, pretend, and make things up."

End of.
Why did I even go there?

I suspect a lot of his recommendations are based around what is likely to be popular. So when he says something like

'the d700 is a great camera but I prefer my d90, it's less than half the price and half the weight. Attach a 18-200mm VR and I'm in heaven..'

What I suspect he's doing is looking to push items which he knows will be more widely sold so he has more chance of making a commission through his affiliate links...

Good business sense but a tad questionable from a review point of view - which he alludes to in his disclaimer.

Just like most 'world famous' photographers, they talk a good game, but when you dig a little deeper, their talent (or lack of) is revealed.

Ken will have made more money from spouting ****** then he will have ever done from taking photographs.

He is the Anna Kournikova of the photography world...

PS Welcome, should I get the exports in?

I don't believe the UK has a fair use policy. The US does though.

Think they might be both jokes, but in all seriousness...
Ken is a Nikon man, Canon do not have a Ken Rockwell, they just have good or bad reviewers.
Rockwell has some fabulously useful superbly constructed instructional sections, opinions and explanations.
He also has some jokes, tongue in cheeks and total BS, it is all entertaining and the peeps that can't decipher fact from fiction are noobs and Canon shooters....it seems..:)
Joke or Genius, I dunno, depends on your point of view, either way its nothing to get emotional about.

I think that image is flipped left to right unless he really does have a left handed camera and wears his watch on his right wrist.

can watches not be worn on the right

Of course -it's just that most people choose one wrist or the other - not swap back and forth. Check Ken out in the video in Post No9.
