Is just jpeg ok for sports?

I always shoot in RAW, but having just had a go at a bit of sports I soon realised I'm filling up a card quite quick. Assuming my exposure and WB are not far off, I was thinking I'd just shoot Fine jpeg. Is that what other sport folks do?

I always shoot sports in .jpg.

I shoot mainly motorsport, and premiership football.
 
Yeah, I shoot in JPEG for sport...I'm usually not blessed with enough time to convert RAW before sending off.

If you get it right in camera (or roughly) then you can make any minor adjustments necessary in something like Photoshop.

I'm shooting for a big 5 agency doing sports and news and that's my workflow, and that of all the other togs I know.
 
I'm only doing local stuff for my rugby club, but I shoot .jpg. Reason being that it writes to the card quicker than huge raw files and therefore get more in busts. Also there is the takes up less space.

It's the way forward.
 
Yeah, I shoot all my equine stuff in jpeg. Medium quality. Import, view, print.
No time for any "muckin about"
 
Yep - always jpeg for sport for me too. Lightroom can still tweak exposure and white balance for jpegs very nicely.
 
generally if you aren't planning to edit it theres no real difference jpeg-raw, and I was told by a very well respected nikon user that canon make nicer jpegs :D

Tweak the picture style to suit a little instead
 
I started to shoot in both RAW & Jpeg, I think it was because I could. Jpeg every time for me now, but im not relying on it for an income. Its a lot faster to store, tweak and move.
 
Yeah I shoot motorsport with just Fine Jpegs, normal would even do.

For example a days coverage of a Uni Karting Race Day, average about 1500 shots and the time to process RAW files would mean missing certain action as it all happens quick!

I thought that the in-camera compression can make a difference to certain components to an image and it IS different. Or am I just thinking of older cameras? :shrug: I'm sure I read somewhere that it is ... I think it was whilst reading about a new G12 or something ..

I'm not into spraying/praying either...I'll short bursts of perhaps 3 shots at peak action.

But I use JPEG as I'm on deadline...it's very much horses for courses.

If you've got all the time in the world and you don't mind PP'ing hundreds of images then go for it...however, I find JPEG to be just as good and honestly never do much if and when I shoot RAW.

i realise that, it was more a tounge in cheek comment.

but like you say for the likes of you its a speed of getting the shots out the door thing. but otherwise for the likes of me i bung 800+ RAW into LR at the end of every event and have them online within 48 hours ready for purchase..

so like you say horses for courses :)

Yeah, I just can't be bothered with 800+ RAW being processed...I'm paid for my time to get to and from an event, and while I'm there...no more than that. My work stops when I leave the event. :D

thats fair enough, i mean i only do basic keep/delete/crop checks before theyre exported at low res to the website for selling.
