is it worth switching from a Sigma 10-20 to a Canon 15-85?

Hi,

I currently have a sigma 10-20 which is a nice lens to use. however i find that while it's good for fitting in that extra detail, it also limits me when walking around if I don't want to change lenses every 5mins.

I am tempted to sell it to raise money for a canon 15-85 but I can't make my mind up. I can't afford both.

I know it's mainly down to personal preference and depends a lot on what I shoot.. but I wanted to see what some people thought from their own perspective.:)

I love my 15-85.. Cracking walkabout on a crop... Great IQ.... I would think it is my most used lens...

Yea, that's what I'm thinking, that it would become my most used lens. It just seems very versatile and the sample images i've seen look really sharp. I guess I'm just a bit worried of losing the extra wide angle at the 10mm end, but on the other hand i think it would open up other options being able to go up to 85 with the canon.

Bear in mind that 5mm at the wide end is massive as far as FOV goes in this case.... depends how often you use the 10-15mm range of the Siggy I suppose, although I have to agree that 10-20mm really isn't what I'd term a walkabout lens....

UWA isn't really about fitting stuff in, they're all about getting funky perspective which 15mm won't really do.

They're not a "walkabout" lens but I can happily use mine all day

I use my 10-20 on a 50d cropped sensor so it doesn't give the funky perspective that it might on others. I still find myself using it quite a lot and do have quite a few pics at 10mm, especially when abroad and just taking photos of streets and buildings etc. then again i might use the 20mm+ range even more if I didn't have to change lenses all the time.

..i'm just thinking out aloud really.. decisions decisions..

The 10-20 is designed for cropped sensors and really is as wide as you can possibly get (bar the odd crazy fisheye), it damn well ought to give funky perspectives :D

it definitely does give good perspectives, i thought that you were implying the real fish eye style ones though, my mistake. maybe i'm getting too used to using it, haha.

My mate bought the 15-85 same time I got my 24-105 and we compared them on a crop body at the focal range they overlapping and it averaged about the same quality, better at the wider end.
