Ok so im hoping over the next 10 months to build up a portfolio and web site so i can venture into the wonderful world of doing what you love as a job!

A friend at work has asked if i'd take the photos at her wedding in 2 weeks time....i've said i would happily and discussed what she's after....im excited she's excited...should be fun (she's agreed i can use the shot in my portfolio...and i've explained im not a pro but will be doing my best to get the shots she wants).

So i've spent time looking at others wedding togs web sites (a lot on here) to get ideas...
read posts on here...
i like the reportage style wedding photography (so does my friend)....
I've taken shots at my cousins wedding in July (as a guest) and gone through the process of picking and editing (turned out well)...
i've chatted with a mate who does it as a living...
I've started on the list of shots and am visiting the venues on the rehearsal day...

Im looking at my gear now and wondering???...

I currently have:

Canon 7d
15-85mm (3.5-5.6)
50mm (1.8)
100mm (2.8 macro)
70-200mm (f4 L)
Jessops 360 AFD flashgun

8gb CF
4gb CF x 2

2 x Batteries

Im thinking of hiring a 24-70 (2.8)...but thats an additional £60 on top of something im doing for free...?? :thinking:
But in the long run its beneficial...

Im going to invest in another battery and maybe another CF card....

what do people think?
Any advise would be much appreciated!

I would grab a 24-70 as there is a really good reason why alot of pros use them on 1 body, its fast, good focal length & IQ can't be beat unless you carry a pocket full of primes (more expensive).

I've hired lenses before for events just because if you havn't got the glass £60 is far cheaper then £800 ? & unless your going to get £800 of use out of it £60 is peanuts in the long run.

Pretty sure you could do the entire event on your 50mm & 70-200 but would struggle with only 1 Body the 24-70 would offer a nice mediun I think.

You might be better off getting hold of a second body rather than extra glass. Otherwise you'll spend loads of time switching lenses and maybe missing stuff. Depends really if you're just doing formals or doing photojournalistic stuff as well. If the former you'll get away with it but if you're doing storybook then you want to switch from wide to long quickly.

I always try to carry two cameras ready to go at any time, one on the shoulder, one round neck. Your back will scream by the end of the day but the results should be worth it.

Might want a bigger CF card as well if you are shooting all day. My first couple of weddings I ended up doing 2000 shots just to make sure I got the lot - sooo grateful I took many cards with me !

I wonder if you wolud want a differnt FL given that the 7d is a cropped sensor
 
On a crop sensor, I would seriously consider the 17-55 f2.8, it will give you a similar FL as the 24-70 on FF (and most pro wedding togs use FF). It's not expensive to hire, and I would also consider the 70-200 f2.8 as well. Both lenses are IS, and they should sort you for the day.

I take it you have a Canon flash unit ? I have the 7D and a 430 EXII, and I find that using off camera flash with the wireless facility is ace. I tend to hold the flash high in my left hand getting up out of the way - really useful and defo no red eye.

Just make sure you have spare batteries and CF card. A 2nd body will be very handy.

I'd be renting a 5d2 and 24-70, that way you have the flexibility 2 bodies gives you as you won't be able to anticipate the shots yet (a fairly rapid learning curve once you get going)

16gb isn't enough memory for a wedding, its ball park what I use and you want change 3 batteries is good as its 1 per boddy (all you should need with LP-E6's) and a spare

flashguns?
