... My Samsung LCD TV has started to produce vast amounts of green where the whites should be on the image... Should I bin it or try to see about getting it fixed? Suggestions on a postcard Please!!

--On a virtual postcard--
With a modern flat panel tv, large scale integration and surface mount components, it's highly likely the repair cost would exceed the value of the equipment...

I was sort if thinking that......

How much will it cost to repair, and how much will it cost to replace it with a similar model? Surely some simple maths here will tell you if it's worth doing? Why ask on here, when we have no idea of either cost? :)

No idea on costs.....was simply looking opinion or similar experiences before I bin it or trail it to the local tv guy....

How much was the TV to begin with? £300, £3000? Help us out here a little.. we're not psychic. LOL

A £300 TV.. bin it.... a £3000 TV.. get it repaired.

I'd draw the line at £150 to repair it. More than that I'd consider buying a new one. at 7 years old it's only a matter of time before something else goes pop.

go to a large currys or tesco superstore ,look at the prices of the latest ones and buy new .ours is 5 years old and overdue now

You could ring a couple of local repairers and see what they say. It may be a common or known fault and they may have a fix price in mind. Yes, these things are relatively cheap these days but if it's a known fault and there's a viable fix you might save some money and if not all you've lost is the cost of a phone call.

It cost £700 about 7 years ago
A lot has changed in that period. Only you can tell whether it is worth the cost. But likely it wont be a repair but a controller board swap out. I would guess you'd easily spend £250 on the "repair"

Nice excuse to get a 4K curved 3D telly :p or just go retro and without.

One thing to think about is the quality of the faulty TV. We have a really nice TV downstairs and it's much better than the other three more modern flat screens we have around the house. Yes, you can get cheap TV's these days but they may not be as good as a really good one from years ago and not everything is a board swap... last time our good TV went faulty it was just a couple of capacitors... IMVHO it's worth looking into a repair if it's a good TV.

a tv costing £700 7 years ago would now be worth about £50

That was my thinking. Or as I would have put it; a £700 tv of 7 years ago is likely to be the £300 tv of today.

7 years ago a good one would have been a Pioneer Kuro, but cost a lot more.

It all depends. I found it really hard to justify an upgrade to my Pioneer as on picture quality alone there was no such thing.

My nine year old Samsung has serious issues too (picture example later).

Even I think it's served it's time.

Sometimes it's a simple fix. This Sammy monitor suddenly refused to power up, instead going into a loop where it tried to start, then crashed each time & re-tried. I replaced two caps in the power supply (1000uf 25V IIRC) and it's been fine ever since, though it did need careful soldering on the PCB. However this issue sounds more serious and less straight forward.
