Is it worth changing 450D for a 50D or better?

Yes
Firstly; I am one of those people who get it fixed into their head that they need a bigger better faster piece of equipment (whatever it is), when perhaps that's not the case.

But that doesn't mean that I'm always wrong!

I have the following:
450D
Canon 50mm 1.8
Sigma 10-20
Canon 24-105 F4 L IS
Canon 100-400 F4L IS

And that's all great, but I read numerous posts about how the budget bodies don't "feel" as good as the midrange 40D/50D. Additionally, I find that a max ISO of 1600 can be limiting. In all honesty, that is the limit of my complaint about the 450D. There may be other benefits to a better body that I have never experienced, because I don't have one! I am considering either a 50D or a 5D2.

So here's my question: Is it worth it to upgrade? There's 2 plausible answers here (as I see it), and I am interested to hear of any others:

1) Don't be an idiot: Stick with what you've got until the limiting factor of your photography is your camera, then upgrade. You will see no benefit before then.

2) Upgrade, try the good stuff and see what you're missing!

Thoughts?

Go to a shop, and have a feel of the 40D/50D! See what you think before making any decisions. Or invest in some fast glass! That way you can get more light, leave the iso lower, and be happy!

Also bear in mind if you're thinking about a 5D mkII, your sigma 10-20 won't fit, and if you're really into wideangle stuff that 16-35L sure as hell isn't cheap! I'd say go for glass for the time being, it'll improve things no end. If it's still not enough, then a new body will still work with your shiny new glass!

I was looking at a 50D today, I had no intention of buying it by the way, but it was around £1200.00 but does it really make that much difference?

My guess is that if you are asking the question then you dont need to upgrade... If there was a compelling event to get you to buy you would have brought it.

However, you do have a good set of Lenses already so why not complement them with an equal quality body?

As for chosing between a 50d and 5DMK2 then if i had the money i would take the 5D everytime :)

The 50d is a big step up from a 450d, 15mp as opposed to 12mp, iso up to 12.800 not 1600, 6.3 frames per second compared to 3.5, and a much bigger buffer. It also has 4 levels of high iso noise reduction, better weather sealing, lens micro ajustment, so called silent shooting (in live view) It also has a lot more options in the menues for setting up the camera to your requirments. Hi m8y
I think you have answered your own question, you don't really want to change
Check this site out, http://www.luciedebelkova.com/ Latest camera is K20D, only ever used Nikon D70, 400D 350D canon
Its not the camera or the software. Its the picture that counts not who or what , that takes it.
Latest camera for landscapes is made of wood and brass and has no lens pinhole landscapes... http://www.stevegoslingphotography.co.uk/ this guy is brill

Keep up the work it's art for yoursake

Cheers

My guess is that if you are asking the question then you dont need to upgrade...

That's certain; I do not need to upgrade. Do any of us need half the gear we've got, or could we get by with older/inferior models? I'm really interested in what benefit I would get, beyond the ISO.

I must admit that I don't recall missing any pictures at 3.5 fps that I would have got at 6.3 fps, but a bigger buffer than the 7 images the 450D gives would be nice. Weather sealing is never a bad thing either.

I must admit that I thought my Sigma 10-20 would fit onto a 5D, but I could stand corrected. As it's one of the last sub-£300 lenses, I don't think I'd lose much selling it on.

But... would I get better photos from a 50D? Probably not, just at 6.3fps, I'd get more of them....

5D? Is full frame worth a grand extra, give or take? My lens range covers full frame quite well (10-400mm).

Moving to full frame was like having my eyes opened. :)

As you freely admit though, you are not exactly missing shots. When you do and it's frustrating then it's time to have good look at some specs and see what it is that you NEED to get those shots.

I've got a 5D MkI and I was getting fed up missing shots because the autofocus is slow. I got a second hand 1Ds and it can keep up with my subjects so I now get the shots I was missing.

When you find you are limited then it's time to get the wallet out. :) in the meantime have fun and push the boundaries of what you do have.

I would really do a lot of research into this company first as i have checked all over the net & i cant find anyone who comes close to that price, seems to good to be true.:suspect:

If that price is correct then i want one.:)

ejaffa are breaking the law by having no contact details on their website. Furthermore if you check the domain name on whois.com you will find that the registered phone number does not exist and the contact email is a gmail account. Why would a commercial website have to use a free email account

[18/02/2009] Maughan: Yes, I too got conned into buying a camera from this site that never arrived. I've contacted paypal and will get my money back. DON'T BUY FROM THIS SITE!!!!

[17/02/2009] dave g: ive never received my item mate. i think this site is a fraud and believe the people behind this should be punished!

I'd steer clear of ejaffa and that type of "too good to be true" pricing with no verifiable contact details. I nearly got bitten by Best Price Deals a few weeks back to the tune of £900+, but it worked out ok in the end.

I have decided to stick with the 450D for longer. When I consider the real benefit I am likely to get from changing, it pretty much comes down to the ISO. Amazingly, I got a "get whatever you like" from the wife, but my RC1 remote wouldn't work with a 50D, my fine collection of Sandisk Extreme 3 SDHC cards wouldn't fit and neither would my spare batteries. All in all, I guess it has to be either a 5D or the 450D in order to make the change significant!

I'll watch the 5D prices with interest over the next few months though...

Thanks for all your advice.

I bought a camera on the 26th February that did not arrive. I escalated the claim with Paypal but they will not refund me. eJaffa have no funds in their Paypal account.

I believe Paypal should have shut down the seller's account when they first found out that this seller was fraudulent. They are supposed to do this when they receive multiple disputes (two or more) against the same seller.

I think that there were several disputes before my payment. Paypal refuse to reveal the history of disputes with eJaffa. I think that Paypal have been negligent in keeping their account open.

Please contact me (paul@tonertopup.co.uk) with the dates and history if you raised a dispute for items that you did not receive. Together we may be able to take class action against Paypal.

Heh, who was I kidding.

Just thought I'd revisit this thread as many such threads are started, but few seem to get any feedback at the end. I bought the 50D, and am really glad that I did. Whilst the differences individually are not great, cumulatively it is a different beast entirely. The IQ seems loads better, largely I believe because of the way I am using it and the way it feels when in use. I just enjoy it more.

So there you go: See it, like it and afford it? Buy it!
