I would say yes definitely. Not just because of the dog poo issue but for more serious incidents ie dog attacks on sheep etc being able to quickly identify dangerous dogs would be excellent and save councils & police a fortune.

Personally I think all dogs should have a licence, chip & dna record. Dog wardens & police should have the power to stop any owner to check on this too.

is identifying dangerous dogs and issue for the police now then? for that matter how much of an issue is dog attacks on livestock?

Yes it's a big issue, dogs are used in a lot of wildlife crime ie badger baiting, hare coursing etc. People train fighting dogs by killing cats and livestock & fighting dogs are a weapon so removing them from the streets is very important. Also if you look at the cost of replacing a sheep etc killed by a dog of a lead there's financial implications too!

There's 8.5 million dogs in 24% of the households in the UK.

Just how many incidents are caused by this as a percentage of ownership? So you'd punish honest, caring owners for the actions of a few?

If you've a piece of empty ground you intend growing in, you can lay it straight down now and dig in next spring before planting; but if you put fresh manure around established plants, it will burn them.

So how big an issue is it? You've not said.

I struggle to imagine that anyone using their dog for any criminal activity is going to suddenly register their dogs dna. That's if you could get a clean sample form a dead cat/ hare etc

You've said there's a cost implication for sheep, how big is it? Do you think you'll get a good sample from a dead sheep. How many different organisms on that wound? The sheep, bacteria, anything that's fed on the carcass before you get to the dog and anything else it's bought to the party.

I agree removing dangerous dogs is very important, but this won't help. All that will happen is responsible dog owners will register their dogs and nothing else will change

You could always couple it with a "shoot on sight" policy for unregistered dogs. That would encourage participation. :naughty:

In light of the rising frequency of human/grizzly bear
conflicts, the Montana Department of Fish and Game
is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra
precautions and keep alert for bears while in the field.

their clothing so as not to startle the bears that aren't
expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry
pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a
bear.

It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear

between black bear and grizzly bear poop.

Black bear poop is smaller and contains a lot of berry seeds and squirrel fur.

Grizzly bear poop has little bells in it and smells like pepper spray.

Just don't forget to tape a long stick to the barrel and hang s sausage on a string from the end. Otherwise shoot a dog with a revolver could be quite challenging.

Not quite the same, but it shows the mentality,
I have a line of small shrubs at the bottom of my front garden, that boarders a pavement.
They are quite slow growing and have ( mostly) only been in a year. the end one, next to my drive is turning brown and dying due to dogs taking a leak up it.

I just happened out side the other afternoon, and a guy was stood at the end of my drive, while his dog p***ed up the front of the shrub,
it then came round the back of the shrub, onto my garden, and p***ed up the other side.

I asked him what the hell he thought he was doing, nothing was the reply, well do something and stop your dog from p***ing up my shrub then!
He proceeded to completely deny it, until I told him that I was stood there for half a minute or so, and then he just played the "I'm ill" card.
WTF that had anything to do with it I don't know. ( but still never admitted it)
So if you can't get them to admit p***ing up a shrub when caught red handed, you've no chance of getting them to pick up the crap!

You know what, I believe that it didn't even register with that guy. I see so many diffy people about, or playing in their phone all the time when walking the dog or chatting on the phone. No different then when they are with their children. There is no interaction or interest. So the first reaction is very human like as Shaggy put it very well in his song "It wasn't me". Even when caught red handed as they honestly "weren't there".

It does make me sad such situations.

Ps. What is wrong with a dog having a p***?
 
My previous house had no front fence and l would often find dog mess on tbe lawn.
ln an effort to stoo it l hung some bags on a post, guess what ................
The bags all got nicked :(
