I can not think of anything else in my daily life that winds me up quite as much as dog s***! One of the reasons I don't have a dog is I don't want to pick up s*** and here I am picking someone else's up!

We need dog licences with chipping and DNA.
 
As a responsible dog owner, that always picks up after my woofer, this winds me up no end. If you have a dog, you should be responsible enough to clean up after it. Lazy...pure and simple.

Well intentioned as your suggestion is, it does however rely on people being honest enough to present their dogs to the vets (or wherever) to have a DNA sample taken, get it chipped etc etc etc. I cant see how it could be Policed.
 
I'm reasonably sure there's a country that just started doing this. In a year or so, we'll know if it works or not. I'm basically guessing not.

On a related note, we need to have a word with "responsible" dog owners. Dog poo is pretty nasty stuff but at least it's biodegradable. Until you wrap it in a plastic bag and hang it up in a tree.
 
It's very difficult to DNA ID a dog from it's faeces.

There are so many other organisms in dog poo, each with its own DNA profile, that the lab testing and time proves immensely cost prohibitive as well.

Some US states tried it recently (they fine heavily for dog fouling already wherever possible and dogs are prohibited from most public parks and beaches), but the cost versus catch rate made it a very short lived process.

I couldn't agree more. I love dogs but hate it when people don't pick up after them. I know occasionally your dog may crap behind a tree out of sight but there really is no excuse for it.

OP I thought compulsory microchipping was in place from next year http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21345730. DNA testing crap is probably prohibitively expensive

surely the DNA testing should be roles out with the chipping.

There is a article in the guardian a few months back with a borough in London planning to implement it. The company doing the testing charges £30 per dog for DNA testing then £70 for the poo testing. Not very expensive and increased fines should cover it.
 
I suggest we DNA profile every human and hold them accountable for their own feckwittery before worrying about dogs.

I hate cats crapping in my garden.
Let's profile them too.

@viv1969 explained very eloquently why DNA testing poo doesn't work. you're never going to get a clean sample (pun intended).

which then begs the question of what gain there is to DNA profiling every dog. The reality is, like now, responsible owners will clean up. Have well trained and microchipped pets. People who don't do so now wouldn't start

Nah, we need better people who have some community spirit.

Who is going to pay for all the dna tests? The logistics of getting the poop there. Policing and enforcing it.

Yet this is a simple community issue. Why not name and shame be people that are doing this. Get the local parish together and discuss the approach in conjunction with your neighbours.

More regulation and increasing government is just not going to help and cost us all more money whilst all it takes is a bit of personal responsibility.
 
Is it an offense to not walk a dog? In the 2 years i've lived here i've seen my neighbour walk the dog 3 times ( i work from home so here all day). The garden is full of s*** she obviously hate picking it up. The poor dog runs out on the street when she comes home in the evening, no doubt desperate to relieve itself. I'm yet to catch them in the act but am pretty convinced the regular mess in the street is them. I do not know how to deal with this. We have a good relationship but something needs to be done.

Any suggestions?

Causing it to suffer is. If it were suffering as a result its an offence. But there could be any number of reasons why you choose not to exercise, vets instructions or just a breed that doesn't need much walking for example, so not walking in itself isn't

No. As Hugh said, if not walking it is causing a welfare issue for it, that might be, but there are reasons why dogs aren't walked so you can't take it at face value. As for DNA testing, it has already been pretty much covered, it's expensive, hard to do cleanly and policing such a law would be at best difficult. On public pavements, it should always be cleared, I do it, every dog owner i know personally does it...and the bag put in a bin, not hung somewhere. In parks etc, again, when possible it should be picked up, but not always possible. I have jack russells, they can get in to undergrowth no human can get to, so sorry, I am not taking my secateurs and branch saw with me. I think it was in Scotland where they used to have a 'pick or flick it' rule in open spaces... in other words, either pick it up and dispose of properly, or flick into an undergrowth area where people aren't going to be walking. A very sensible idea imo.

I think we should follow a Chinese district government method http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/china-we-will-kill-your-dog-local-authority-tells-pet-owners-1519360 and cull ALL dogs (except working dogs such as sheperds sheepdogs and drug etc sniffer dogs working for authorities) to get rid of them crapping in our streets and parks spreading disease. Why can I not take my grandkids to the swing park or local park to play because the place is covered in dog dirt. Owners picking up after the dog only gets rid of the dump the dog did, bugs could be left in the grass or soil. Dogs peeing never gets cleaned. When I was a Post Office driver years ago there was nothing worse than bending down to empty a pillar box having to lay the bag in fresh dogs p!ss where it had cocked it's leg. Let the manky dogs crap in the owners garden or front step and clear from there, not in public places. I've never understood why people allow them to lick their face when probably earlier they have been licking their ass to clean it or another dogs. Yes you guessed right, I don't like em.

How about compulsory dog nappies when in public places? It would be easy to spot non-compliant owners, who could then be tasered whilst the dog gets impounded.
 
Heard of this solution a few years ago, where they basically sent the poo back to the dog owner in a box marked lost property. According to the article they saw a 70% reduction in the amount of dog poo on the streets.

We could always try the old trick of putting it in a paper bag, putting it on someones doorestep, setting fire to it and then ringing the doorbell...
 
Not walking a dog is not an offence.
The same as not letting a cat outdoors is not an offense (and there are millions of "house cats").

If the aforementioned dog is in good health, the dog mess in the garden is a public health matter, but even then only if it can be proved to be impacting on public health.

Yes, and while we are at it let's implant a tracker so that they can be followed everywhere they go (with, of course, voice transmission so that conversations can be recorded). The technology to do that exists, but work needs to start thought monitoring.
Stalin and Chairman Mao would have loved this. So would the boy in NK with the dodgy haircut and suit like a potato sack.
 
The PDSA quote 5 dog welfare rules one of which is regular exercise although it does not specify walks.

The disease etc quoted against dogs causing blindness toxicaria is exceptionally rare.

Where I live we have a 'law' that dogs MUST be on a lead at all times and the lead MUST not be longer than 60 inches - who are they going to go after? The little old person with a 7lb poodle on a 10 foot lead or the chav with the snarling pit bull?

Perhaps we should be more proactive - if I see someone not picking up after there dog I offer them a plastic bag with the comment "Your dog just left you a present"
 
My pet hate too dog owners who don't clear up their dog mess
In my opinion dogs shouldn't be allowed on nature reserves
The problem has got so bad at one of my local places the nature reserve warden has started spraying the s*** with purple paint I guess to try to shame them into clearing up after themselves
I like dogs tho not anti dog and realise that it's only a small percentage of them that do it but it's very antisocial

Why stop there? Implant the owner at the same time.
