Is it possible to buy a cheap, decent acoustic?

I'm looking to spend around £40.

Basically, here's my history:

I bought an electric guitar, played for about a year, got okay-ish, but saw it as more of a burden than a pleasure and so sold it on here.
I really enjoy strumming away at chords, much more so than tabs, and recently I've shown an interest in playing an acoustic, but, I'm not sure whether this is a hobby that will stick (see: photography, skiing) or whether it will be one of those passing interests/hobbies that makes me spend money on it and then I get bored (see: longboard, electric guitar, karate).

So, can I buy an okay acoustic guitar, first or second hand, for under £40?

I have no clue as to what a decent guitar is or what makes one :thinking:

We bought my son a cheap one from ebay, its a nice looking but ungranded one we paid £70 for it and I have just asked him if he wants to sell and he would be so if you fancy it I can put it in classifieds for you

If cheap means it is hard to play then it is not worth the money because you won't stick with it.

My favourite guitar cost be £100 (squire), plays well, sounds good.

Another vote for Yamaha here. Fantastic value for money, IMO. Especially their Pacifica, which is a superb guitar that I wish I'd never sold.

Their acoustics are good too. I got given one a few months back, by a friend who gave up trying to learn. :thumbs:
 
I don't think I've ever come across a poor Yammy instrument. I've no real experience with their guitars, but I had a leccy bass made by Yamaha and it was superb. And the only reason I chose a PDP drum kit over Yammy was price.

So its a :plusone: for Yamaha from me.
 
Go for 2nd hand every time, you'll get a higher quality instrument at a good price.
Check it stays in tune and strings don't 'buzz' on other frets while holding a note on each.
 
I got an Encore electro acoustic about 10 years ago that's still going strong these days apart from one dead fret where it was dropped, and the pick-ups don't work because I jumped in a swimming pool with it when sozzled.

Encore geetars are quite good for the money - 2nd hand shouldn't be a prob for 40 notes.

Seriously though, I bought an electro-acoustic from them a few years ago and its very good quality :)
 
Unfortunately at the cheaper end of the guitar market there can be quite a bit of variability in the build quality so it would be worth finding someone who plays already to help you choose an instrument. I've played some real dogs of guitars that cost more than £40 and also some pretty reasonable ones around that price. Your best bet is probably to peruse local classifieds and just go and try some instruments out.

I would second comments about Yamaha instruments, the build quality tends to be a notch above other marques at the same price point.

It is worth buying the best you can find (and afford) as you just won't want to play a badly made guitar.
 
Yamaha - personally I'd buy anything from them, they're sweet, especially for musical insturments and have amazing quality compaired to other makes around the same price.

Epiphones - they're canny, but their accoustic range according to hubby is "spot on" - they make pretty sweet accoustics.
 
I'm happy to send you a tuner if you like, although they are available as apps on iPhones and Android devices, if you have one of those.

My mate at work bought a second-hand bass guitar before Christmas, and it came with a tuner in the case, which he offloaded on me. I don't need it though, so you're welcome to it free of charge. :)

Pity you can't double that £85. I have a mint condition Yamaha Apx 5 electro acoustic in a hard case that I would have let you have for £170 including postage. Brilliant condition with a new set of strings too!

Cost me well over £400!

It is a pity, but unfortunately I have £80 christmas money and I'm currently £180 into my £500 overdraft - I would have put the £80 into my bank account but my parents said they wouldn't allow it as they gave me £50 to get myself a guitar with so unfortunately that's how much I have to spend :(

Thanks though! If it's still there when I'm on my way to being the next Santana (haha yeah right! :gag:) I'll put an offer in ;)
 
I would personally plump for the Yammy, but only because I've not played an Epiphone acoustic before, and I know the Yammy would be a safe bet.

I'm going to play my guitar now, for the first time in a few weeks. Thanks for the inspiration. :D
 
Personally i would go for the yamaha... the 310 for the price has good tone qualities and is def a good starter for the price...your best bet would be to go secondhand and I would stick with Yamaha you cant really go wrong...try music shops (notice boards) local papers or local music forums these are a good source for band gear ... then learn how to play the chords C,G,and F then your world is your oyster prob in excess of 300 songs :D
 
That was pretty much my experience too, when I was looking for my Telecaster. Worth a shot though.

I'll throw a free capo into the tuner envelope. Just found it laying in the corner with some other unused guitar stuff. You might get some use out of it. :thumbs:
 
D minor, which I always find is really the saddest of all keys

I picked up a used Tanglewood for a few peanuts, it was a beautiful guitar and had a better tone than a mates Ovation that cost over £500. One of my biggest regrets is selling this guitar.
