What am I doing wrong? I have recently bought a Canon 3000v and a 1000n as I like film cameras and cannot afford the digital equivalent. Both cameras are reading full batteries but both have the same problem. I take a shot and the film does'nt wind on or I have to turn the camera off then on again before I can continue shooting. Sometimes the 1000n refuses to shoot at all.
Both cameras appear in excellent condition.
I am sure it is me but what is wrong. I am desperate for help.
Many thanks Chris

Chris, I am not familiar with these models - what battery do they take? Are they new batteries?

In my experience with other cameras - the full battery indication is no guarantee that the batteries are indeed full. Plus, bad quality batteries often give spurious indications due to bad voltage ( the amperage is max, which is what the indicators read off, but the voltage is down, so the camera motor cant work.)

If they are regular batteries, I will suggest get a new set of Pana sonic or Varta from a regular shop.

the other thing is, most of the eos film cameras tend to lock up and flash the battery symbol if they have problems with the lens. It's the same thing that would come up with err99 on the digital jobs. Give the lens contacts a good cleaning, both on the lens and camera. I had a Sigma 28-200 zoom that gave wierd errors on my eos-3 when you tried to set it to anything other than wide open aperture. Shoot on wide aperture and it was fine. Stop it down, and it "crashed" the camera - only way to sort was to switch to "L" and back again.

ah...alll those stupid electronics, I tell you. Thats where a Leica M scores. No electronics, no faff :D:D:D

I'm sure Chrisandy would use a Leica M if he could get one for the price of a Canon 3000v or 1000n  :p

I am sure he would. But that wasn't the point at all - what a waste of humour :D

( and some response to his question might be a bit more helpful to him :lol:)

One of the things about 90s automated cameras is they are easily disgruntled by simple things. My plastic fantastic Nikons played merry hell if you forgot to return the lens to F22 when you wanted to go auto after shooting manual or AP. In fact the screen would flash at virtually anything, camera shake, a long lens, you name it, and sometimes not let you play at all.

I agree it sounds like there's a setting conflict.

I'd start by cleaning all the contacts in the battery chambers, the battery contact faces, and the lens / lens mount. Also - if possible, check that it's not a lens issue, by borrowing a standard working modern EF lens from someone and swapping that in, see if it cures things.

Which lens or lenses are you using Chris? As I saif ^^^ up there, some third party lenses which worked fine on "old" EOS cameras, like the EOS-5 have issues when it comes to more "modern" releases such as my EOS-3 and the 2 ones you mentioned... Sigma lenses are fairly notorious for it, as they reverse engineered (quite badly) the EF lens signal protocol rather than licensing it from Canon - then as Canon started putting more stuff into the lens, and expanded the range of signals that were sent to/from the lens the Sigma's were left stranded. It was possible to get a service exchange upgrade to the logic, but only for a couple of years after the big changes - they're now decidedly un-available :( It's a shame, because the 28-200 sigma zoom was a handy, if big, heavy and slow bit of glass. Since my EOS-5 died, it's now pretty much a paperweight :(

Thank you all very much for the help, I will start with battery replacement , an expensive business in itself, and if it is not that then it would appear that my Sigma lenses are causing the problems. I might also end up with a couple of expensive paper weights. The 1000n is the oldest camera and maybe more likely to accept the Sigma lenses so I will start by trying to sort that out.
Again many thanks for all of your help and amusing ideas, Anyone out there with a cheap Leica!!!
I will post the results, maybe help another sufferer.
Thanks Chris

If you can Chris, borrow a "known good" canon EF fit lens from somewhere, and try that first - might just save the price of a battery (which could be half the cost of a cheap EF kit zoom from fleabay )

Mark, was the Canon lens you send me an EF fit? If so, I can send it to Chris for him to test. Where are you located, Chris?

That's where I got my pricing for the kit lens Ujjwal - think it cost me a fiver when I left half a dozen silly low-ball bids on items over a weekend, then went somewhere without internet access. Came back to find i'd won the auction on the one I sent you, plus another with the USM focussing, and a 28-105 USM that I ended up keeping as my kit lens. I know when I sent you it, it worked on my EOS-3, both my mates 3's and his EOS-1V , along with modern digital ones, so it should be fine

Many thanks for all of the help did not realise how helpful people could be. I live in Nottingham and would be delighted to pay for the Ef lens or the postage or return it when tried.
I am going to Italy week after next and would like to take some memorable pictures while there.
I will meantime clean everything and try again.
Many thanks again Chris.
p.s. I have already sent this message but it must have got lost in the system or I pressed the wrong button. I am a 65year old idiot trying technology that I should really leave to my grandchildren.

Chris

Send me your addy, and I'll put the lens in the post - hopefully Tuesday.

Its a gift from a dear friend of mine, so I'll like to have it back when you are done please.

P.S : I wonder what you'll do for your italy trip if this lens-camera combo doesn't work? Do you want me to send you my Canon EOS as well for your Italy trip as a backup, and you can send me both back when you are done with them?

Thank you Chris

Offer very much appreciated but I would like to persevere with what I have, I go on Sept 7th so if it all goes 'pearshape' I might come back to you for the offer. I have an old working Pentax that I could use if really desperate.
Thank you Chris

chris i have a eos 100ofn have you pulled the film far enough across i'm sure that the 1000f and fn take all the film across onto the take up spool and then rewind back into the camera as you take the photos so that if the back is opened accidentily the photos youve taken are safe in the cannister

I go on September 7th just over a week away so don't put yourself to too much trouble plenty of time. And thank you Mike but I got a pro to put the last film in because I thought that might have been the problem. No better. I am leaning towards the suggestions above that it is battery, lens compatibility or contacts, but thank you for your input.
Chris
