No
So today I purchased a Panasonic Gx1 and off I went to watch my daughter at gym and take some pictures to see how it performed - a complete and utter let down....now the question is, is it me or the camera

I'm guessing the lighting wasn't the best as the sun was setting and casting shadows into the room but honestly my iphone did a better job.

The following pictures were taken one after another with IA mode on

I took lots of action shots in "sports" scene mode and IA, in single shots and bursts - probably 5% turned out ok

I'm hoping its something fundamental I'm doing wrong but I thought the whole point of IA mode was it managed the settings to produce good results

Kinda looks like you have exposure bracketing on.. Maybe check that first before anything else.

Thanks Tom, I don't know what exposure bracketing is but I'll try and find out. I haven't changed any settings except the scenes modes and the time.

Could it be a fault with the camera?

Too hard to say without more info. Can you post up the EXIF info for the images, or take some new ones.

Unlikely a issue with the camera, more likely user error or camera setting error somewhere.
Exposure bracketing is where the camera takes a number of exposures at different values in order to either make an HDR image, or chose the best for the scene.
It will take one properly exposed and then a sequence of under and over exposed images in succession. I'm not sure how this camera does it, whether its one click takes all the bracket shots, or if it's a single click for each different value.

If its not that, its likely an auto exposure issue, try some images outside of the auto mode, preferably in aperture priority and see what it does. Could be the strong light and shadows confusing the metering.

Exif data is intact with those shots tom.

1st one is +3 ev exposure compensation
2nd is -3 ev
3rd +2 ev
4th -2 ev

Either theres some weird kind of exposure bracketing going on or perhaps you knocked the exposure compensation dial on the camera?

Oh wait, could it be HDR mode was enabled?

Thanks - Auto bracket was switched on, the camera was ex display so it must have been switched on before I bought it.

Now switched off and work fine, thanks for your help

Yes good call

I nearly bought a GX1 but ended up with the G3 for a short time which I believe was the same 'insides'. Both capable of good shots so it will be good to see more of your work in due course.

Perhaps you ought to do a master reset in case any other setting was tweaked

Always a good idea to do a restore back to default settings when getting a camera that has been played with, as has been proven here.

Too many knobs on cameras these days

Even my little P&S but that's the reason I bought it - Nikon P7700.

Good guess. I was on my ipad so couldnt view EXIF, otherwise that would have confirmed it straight away.

First thing I do when I get a camera is reset the thing! Put's it back to out of the box spec! Very helpful!
