Is it me or are photo mags boring?

When I first started out in photography with a DSLR, I spent a monthly fortune, buying every mag available and devoured them from cover to cover. They were really helpful to a beginner even though I did get fedup seeing the same articles regurgitated in a slightly different format, until I realised they were all the same publisher and were "Sister" mags!!

Although I don't do any major manipulation in PS (switching backgrounds etc), I have learned all about curves and levels etc from these mags which really helps.

However, I think I am now at the next stage (joined a camera club, enetered a few competitions, eager to learn more advanced skills), and there doesn't seem to be much to move me forward so I agree....there needs to be something in between the "photography for beginners" mags and those for the advanced professional.

Outdoor Photography is a great mag for letting you know where good places are, and how to get to them, if you like that kind of thing and I love B&W mag.

It would be lovely to see all reveiws moved to "what camera" & "what lens" type mags, but then there would be no revenue to pay the writers to produce the articles we all crave!!
 
Photo magazines are great for people learning about how photography works, and as new machines come out then they are reviewed, making us want the new kit and makeing the wallet very light.

However they are chasing a small and very very competative market place so unfortunatly you will get lots of thing repeated over a period of time.

Some of them are better, like Black & White and Outdoor photgraphy, but again they cater for and estabilished market place. How to get the best out your DSLR for landscape, black white etc.

There are other magazines out there which are aimed at an even smaller market place, but they are more money.
AG a quartley magazine, £12.50 a go, but like a small book, no adverts, beautiful printing, looks at the photgraphers but also has interesting articles on using digital techniques.

Silvershotz think it is bi-monthly £7.50 a shot. VERY high quality mainly black and white fine art stuff.

I have a subscription to both.

Another British mag is Hotshoe again bi-monthly and certainly loks at different photgraphers from around Europe as well as the UK.

If any one has a larger Borders shop near them then go have a look at what the American photgraphy mags are like. Certainly recommend American Photo but recently that is getting more "gear focused".

There are magazines out there, just a case of looking in other places then WH Smith, mich to me has a poor selection of magazines.
