Is it just me or are my Estate Agent's pics rubbish?

Cheers for the useful comments tikkathreebarrel. :)

My pleasure.

I neglected to say earlier; it was gaining the confidence - or curiosity;)0 to switch my then employer's camera from full auto that got me interested, nay addicted, to digital photography. Even so I found that I was using full auto or Program mode 98% of the time for business photos (no time for pp).

I'm not sure i can add much but to say, i still get amazed at how much more you get for your money oop north. I bought my house, this time last year and it cost me significantly more than yours and it's significantly not as nice!

Good luck with the sale

I think you have to be careful with 'selling your house' shots, but it depends entirely what the house is like. This looks like a nice interesting property and as such deserves better pictures (though I have seen much worse).

I did the photos for our last house about 2 years ago as I kind of knew I'd take more time, and do a better job than the estate agent. However, to give the money grabbing useless fu...(sorry, estate agents) credit they did make one very good point to consider. On no account should you make the house look 'better' than it actually is. The last thing you want is people turning up for a viewing and being immediately dissappointed by the reality. The photos should tease you in.

Interesting how nobody has jumped in too stand up for the photographers right not to have his pictures slated without the opertunity to respond like they do every time some dodgy wedding photos are posted. Is it because we all hate estate agents or is it because we have working wedding togs posting on the board, guess we'll never know!

I don't see what's wrong with them personally

They give a clear indication of the decor of the property along with the condition, and also highlight some unique features that will attract potential buyers. It also tells me you have a galleried landing big enough for usage, a low maintenace garden area, and modern kitchen/ablutions.

If you want a Home & Garden type spread, phone Home & Garden. If you want pictures of your house that give buyers an insight in to your property and leave them curious to see more, give your EA a pat on the back.

No one ever bought a house from the EA's photos alone, and these certainly aren't that poor that they'd be put off.

i think its cos they sent the office girl round, not someone claiming to be a pro? Ive not read the whole thing though...

The office girl came first then the virtual tour guy did some, still doesn't change te point why does everyone think it's ok to slate these pictures be they pro or not when the origional atrtist has no chance to reply yet if the same happens to a set of wedding photo's no matter how bad they are everyone takes the moral high ground and won't slate them?

But doesn't that make it worse; a pro should know better and IMO should be open to comment (OK I wouldn't like it if I was at the receiving end; but then if I had taken anything as bad as the ones highlighted by DD I think I would be truely ashamed and deserve a public flogging). The one thing different about this thread from others recently is that the OP simply links to another site so there is no copyright issue.

As for the photos, I have seen far worse from EAs, the ones you've shown do give a reasonable impression of the quality of the finish the house has. Given the market segment likely to look at your house I doubt that top quality photography will make the sale any quicker.

I think that the fact you have a Virtual Tour of the property is probably going to be more effective at getting you viewers who are actually interested; they do give a reasonable insight to the house. If I was looking for a house in that price range and saw these and the photos I would definately be tempted to look.

From the EA business side, I am sure that they can gain some competitive edge in the current climate by training their staff in photographic skills (even if it is just in obtaining houses to sell). However, the question has to be will the edge they gain be more than the investment they make? Even then are there the resources available to make the investment?

The typical thing is that if they don't have the resources available for the training when they do (i.e. when the market improves) they won't have as much need for the training as the houses will start sell more freely.

well to me, if the shots where taken by someone who does it for a living, then stone away, but they were taken by someone who clearly doesnt know whats what, and spends her day making tea and typing stuff(like me, lol).

Just to be clear I didn't start the post to slate the photos, I just wanted other peoples opinions to see if I was expecting to much for 1.25% of my house sale value? I also wouldnt call the people who took them artists (although nice people), the girl didnt know how to work the camera and the virtual tour guy told me that he had no experience or interest in photography. He had just recently bought a Virtual Tour Franchise from a big company one day to make money in his spare time!

I live in the house and know that the photos don't capture the character of the house at all. If I saw them without knowing the house I may not bother booking a viewing considering its high price for the area.

The worst photo has to be the master bedroom, which is actually 20 x 20 foot (inc bathroom & dressing room) with a vaulted ceiling and exposed wooden beams. They have put up a rubbish pic of a bed and drawers??? The other rooms are not much better I'm afraid.:'(
