Is high speed sync essential for macro?

No
I've just ordered a nissin Di622 flashgun for my 40D and various macro lens set up, thinking I'd done all the reading I needed to on what flashgun to buy.

But I've just discovered that the Di622 doesn't support high speed sync (I thought I'd read it did).

On my 40D this means I'll be limited to 1/250sec. How limiting do you think this will be for macro photography? If it's a feature I'm going to need, I want to send it back for a different model as soon as possible (it hasn't arrived yet).
And what other flashguns are there that don't cost too much (I'm limited to about £150) that do support high speed sync?.

Thanks for any help

You should be OK - i shoot manual 1/200 nearly all the time with a MT24-EX can't see you needing anything above with macro because of the small apertures required for DOF, you'll be around f11 - f16 most of the time so the flash will be the main light source rather than fill

Thanks guys, sounds like 1/250sec wont be a problem.

Thanks for calming my worries

Not for macro maybe, but HSS is extremely useful for many other things, notably fill-in flash outdoors.

Canon 270EX does HSS, and is a more powerful little gun than you might think from the headline spec, so does the 430EXII. Most Metz guns too, like the 50 AF-1.

The 270 out of those is the only one that's in my budget, and I really need a flash gun with an adjustable head to get the flash in the right place and be able to use small softboxes and stuff for macro.
If I was going to spend more, I think it would be on the nissin Di866, seems better than the 430EXII for the same price... but I'm just not sure I can afford it.

I don't really intend to use it as a fill flash, it's been purchased pretty much solely for macro.
