IS Broken on Canon EF-S 17-55 f2.8

I wondered if anyone has any experience on the following problem.
Yesterday I put my EF-S 17-55 lens on my camera and when I half press the shutter button a horrible noise was heard and if you looked through the view finder the image was jumping up and down, shaking really fast.

If I switch off the IS it works perfectly. Yesterday it was only doing the problem at the wider end, i.e 17-40ish, today it's the other way round.

My other half who is quite technically/engineeringly minded says it sounds like the cogs/gears motors etc are just worn out and slipping - possibly made worse due to the heat??

I've tried replacing the battery as it was quiet low, and obviously things like removing the lens, cleaning the contacts, switching the camera off.

The lens is about 3-4 years old so out of warranty. It has done a lot of work.

Does anyone have any more ideas? Is this a common problem?
Finally where should I send it to be repaired???

Failure of the IS mechanism is not uncommon with these lenses apparently, there have been a few posts from people with this issue.

There was a thread a while back from someone who purchased a 17-55 with faulty IS and had it fixed for around £160 I think, but I can't find the thread now.
 
I thought that would be about the price of repair.
 
If you find the thread let me know as I'd like to make a note of where he had his fixed in case mine ever plays up (fingers crossed!) :)
 
Ouch, if it's that much I think I'll just use the lens with the IS switched off. I'll contact Canon in the morning.
 
Who did you get the quote from, I phoned around when my 17 - 85 auto focus went, Fixation were the best quote.

Just spoke to Elstree Canon who said a replacement IS part would be a fixed price of £102 including VAT and return delivery..... Doesn't sound like a bad price to me. It will come with 6 months warranty.

I did forget to ask how long it would take though...
 
Hi I bought one with broken IS apparently it is quite common. I had the lens repaired at Thomas Camera Services in Southborough Tunbridge Wells. I have to say the service was great I dropped the camera off on Tuesday and they called Wednesday night to say it was all done. Also very reasonable new IS, service, reset and 6 month warranty for £140. I was quoted £180 by canon so if they have told you £102 I would definalty go with that.
 
Glad to hear you are getting it sorted Nicky. The 17-55 is on my radar (after a macro lens- that is your fault!) but with the performance my 18-50 gave at the weekend I think it may be on hold for a while!

I'm going to ring them again today, just to double check that price.
 
Give Lehmans a bell, repaired IS motor on my 100-400.
Not sure about the price, two years ago now, £150ish I think

Just to finish the story, I sent the lens to Elstree on Friday 9th July and got it back in perfect, clean, working condition on Tuesday 20th and it was for the fixed price of £102 including VAT & return delivery.

So I am very happy and would definately recommend Canon at Elstree.
