Hi All

I dont have alot of money and thinking of upgrading my Canon 400d to a 40d since there are some going around for about £450..

Cant afford a 50d so that out of questions

What improvement will i see over the 400d from the 40d?

I did it and never looked back. Faster AF more FPS and feels soooo much nicer.

I upgraded from the 350D to the 30D and it was a very worthwhile upgrade, it's a miles better camera as the 40D would be compared to the 400D. I felt it was a bigger upgrade than going from the 30D to a 5D.

The handling is so much better, it feels great to hold as it's a good size compared to the 400. The scroll wheel on the back is a huge improvement to the buttons on the back of the 400. It's a ridiculous reason but the shutter sounds nicer too.

this is going to sound daft but i think the upgrade is worth it simly for the rear control wheel.

What else is meant to be better on the 40D... The thing i think i would like sometime is the Live view am i right that the 40d have this.. And if I wanted to take a photo can i use the screen when it harder to use the eye piece?

I have been using liveview for some of my macro shots manually focusing (saves the knees). You can set a custom function so it drops the mirror and focuses the lifts it again. Its not like the liveview on a P&S or some other DSLRs but works well for some shots.

I upgraded from a 300D and have been thoroughly impressed.

The 40D is faster in every respect (startup, focus), easier to use, feels better balanced, menus are improved, battery lasts forever (feels that way anyway), wheel and screen are great.

I know your upgrade is from a newer body, but the 40D must be the best value camera from Canon to date, unless the 50D starts tumbling in price.

Go for it mate, you wont regret it. I had the same insecurities before I upgraded from my 400D to a 40D, you wont look back mate.

it just the matter of selling my 400d with it grip first then I'll do it

1) The rear control wheel
2) Digic III (I don't think the 400 is, is it ?)
3) Better file options
4) 6fps

And that was without thinking about it..... I had a 350, but the 40 is another level again.

Steve
