is a ring flash only for macro shots?

its great for fashion and just about any type of 'People' photography.. not just Macro..

Ideal for portraits as it leaves no harsh shadows.. Just a soft halo..
 
True, the ones for macro can be fairly low powered..
 
There are several different types of ringlight, all for different applications. There are the macro ones that are only any good at short range. There are ringlight adaptors that can be fitted to flashguns and can be useful if shooting outdoors. Then there are the full blown high power ringlights with their own powerpacks. Last but not least there is a ringlight that fits to a studio head (Bowens)

It depends what kind of shot you have in mind.
