Is a Nikon D40 any good for motorsport?

No reason why not.

Ok, it's not gonna shoot 11fps like the top of the range of cameras but a good long lens will probably do you better than a d3.

You'll just have to make sure you nail the shot rather than just machine gun it every time a car goes past. Would probably help your technique before you move onto more pricey stuff!

I've taken perfectly good stuff at castle coombe with a 70-300 and the d70 before so no reason why not.

The autofocus is going to struggle. With planning and good lenses you will get some good pictures, just like any camera.

Well i used a d40 for my Chatsworth shots and although it wasnt perfect i cant complain. I only had 200mm to play with though and if i`d had better technique i`m sure i could`ve made the most of it.

this is what i was doing with my D40 and a 200mm lens

Which 200mm lens were these shot with? Excellent shots

have a look at my site, click my sig

all images there were taken with a D40X

Isn't there a pretty big difference between the D40 and the D40x?

Value-for-money wise you can't really beat the D40/55-200 VR combo. Buy then carefully and you can have both for less than the cost of a 70-300 VR lens on it's own!

The only caveat is that after a short time shooting motorsport the shortcomings of both lens and body will become apparant, but that can be said of any entry level camera body or lens. The upside of buying carefully is that you'll get most of your money back when time comes to upgrade:D:D

it's probably years old and out of date technology wise but it was cheap enough for me and i'm trying to get the best from it ( and me) ,could any of the camera buffs explain to me the numbers/letters and what they mean ???

Thats better than my lens, i`ve got the non VR version which is even cheaper http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-Nikkor-...ryZ30070QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
