Is a motorsport lens on a budget possible?

I wish I could get a cheapo lens until I get decent, however it doesn't really seem I have much available for my camera! Bit gutted really, serves me right for not doing my research!

Cheers guys, some great help there.

Currys/PC World seem to have some good deals pop up on eBay. I saw a Nikon 70-300mm come up yesterday, it had a missing manual but was new otherwise for £240!

They have one up now with a missing lens cap, one unsealed and various other things, still £240. Looking quite tempting.

I have ordered this and will let you know what its like when it arrives

Thanks Carl, looks like a decent deal, I'll definitely bear that in mind.

landerson - Thanks bud, I'll be interested to know how it is as it's quite a substantial saving.

The venues you shoot at will determine the focal length that you need. Although I have some half decent kit I haven't felt that it has been necessary for the limited Motorsport I have shot. If you need reach then it is always gonna cost a bit. Some of my favourite shots have been taken with a cheap zoom, this is at a hill climb where you can get close to the track. I didn't get the impression that drift events needed a long lens as I've seen a lot of wide lens shots. I haven't got round to a drift event yet though, so probably completely wrong :D

Arrived today mate, bit late because DPD messed up and sent it to the wrong sorting office :-[

Very happy with the lens though! Looks immaculate in original packaging! Couple of quick test shots fired off and focuses properly and image quality looks good!

Bargain!

I couldn't help myself today after seeing the lens come up for £200, so I'm now a very guilty (yet happy) soon to be owner of a 70-300, luckily it'll be turning up just before the event (I hope!)

Mine's described as "unsealed", not exactly sure what to expect from that but it still has the 3 month warranty so I'll be hoping for the best!

Chris, here's the link if you're interested: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130856115512&clk_rvr_id=465043923095

They're going like hot cakes too! Must have been posted on a few bargain sites I think!

I'm sure you won't be disappointed Bill.

btw, explanation of `used` http://stores.ebay.co.uk/Currys-PC-World/FAQs.html ;)

That's quite helpful buddy, thanks, gives me an idea even if they have been a little vague! The only details on the 'unsealed' condition I can find are this:
All unsealed, "Used" products are visually inspected and will be deemed saleable.

Sad to see people buying it in lots of 25/35, no doubt we'll see a whole host of them going up for about £250+ as soon as this goes off sale!

Can't wait to get it now, shame the delivery won't be until next week! :'(

Arrived today, really pleased with it so far, only taken a few snaps but can't see any problems at all. Seems like I got exactly what I was after (so far, anyway!) :D

Thanks for all the help and advice guys, it's much appreciated.

get some shots up when you get chance, lets see the quality

I'll take a picture of something boring out in the garden in a bit just to see if you guys can spot anything that isn't as it should be with the final product :)

Just went out quickly into the garden to try it out, nothing really out in the garden at the moment but I was mainly testing out focal lengths etc. It's a bit windy for flowers and as always no birds were around when I wanted to snap them!

Quickly got this at 300mm (fully aware it's far from a good shot though!) I'm more fascinated with having zoom than a decent shot at the moment! :D

Hi chaps.

Forgot to post in here to let you all know my thoughts on the lens.

I went to the British Drift Championship at the weekend to put it to the test, you can see my thread here for the pics: http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=477812

The lens was fantastic for the money. I had a lot of throwaways but I also had a LOT more pictures that I was delighted with than I've put in the thread. Some of them aren't technically perfect but that's down to my error more than the camera!

The AF-S is really quick, I was impressed, and as a cheap all-rounder it really is fantastic value for money. I was lucky to pick up an unsealed one at a bargain price which really helped.

I figured I'd show a nice colourful shot from the day without posting all the pictures again!

I tried a Nikkor 55-200vr and now have a Tamron 70-300vc

The Tamron beats it hands down in every area. Professional opinion on whether its better than the equivalent Nikkor seems as divided as it has been thus far in this thread.

I've just sold my Tamron 18-270, I was very pleased with it but changing to FX lenses.

It was fine for taking some good night shots in Northern Norway but equally at home for family shots.

Really good set Bill, well done. Glad you're happy with the lens too, you got a bargain.

Thanks a lot Carl, it was definitely a bargain and I really hope I can keep progressing with it. It served me well on my first time out so hopefully next time I'll get some great shots! :D
