Is a D90 still right for me

Yes
I had a D40 for a fair number of years, and was all set to upgrade to a D90 last year, however due to a series of disasters an lack of money I have not been able to afford a new camera until now. I was leaning to a D90 last time as I had a bit of Nikon kit and knowledge already, so the D90 with the 18-105 lens was my choice.

However roll on a a year later and I am starting from scratch again so thought it would be wise to think about alternatives Canon/Sony etc

My budget is about £700-£750 so that would be the range of a Canon 550 with a 18-135m etc.

Do you have any other Nikon lenses? Is there anything that you aren't satisfied with using Nikons - i.e what is making you consider the alternative offerings?

I lost everything so will be starting from scratch again, I am very happy with Nikon but just thought it would be prudent to at least consider other marques before ignoring all advice and going with what I originally planned

That's fair enough, and a very considered way of going through things. The advice you get is probably the same as if you were a first time DSLR buyer, albeit it with the caveat that you know that Nikon is a good fit for you - go and try the various major manufacturers cameras, see what feels good to you (other than Nikon). If you find Sony/Canon to be even better, then you can start exploring the options. There's only so much research and reading you can do on the internet before it drives you mad :cuckoo:

+1 (and I need to learn to type faster )

Hiya Simon, all I can say, go to a camera shop and try them out, you already know how a Nikon feels and operates, try the others out and gauge you're decision from there.

:)

I know the feeling oh-so-well - I'd have written what I consider to be an absolute masterpiece of a post (i.e. average at best ;) ) only to click reply and have 8 other people say what I was going to write, but more eloquently and more useful! Ahh well. OP, whilst you had the D40, I assume the kit lens was the only lens you used? Is there anything specific you shoot, or just 'general' things?

Went in to Jessop's (*spit*) today and had a bit of a play with the offerings from Canon, I think I shall stick to the Nikon mainly due to the fact I am already comfortable with the functions etc and I know the Canon will do equally a good job just with things named a little different, also the £100 or so I will save on a D90 means I can get a few extra goodies like bag etc from the start

That's fair enough, good to hear you have reached a decision - yup, most cameras tend to produce pretty acceptable results, just going round it in different ways and methods. Despite newer offerings, the D90 is still a very competent camera and you should have no problems with it, and it will offer an increased range of features and more direct access to settings via more knobs, dials and the LCD on the top panel - having gone from a D40 myself, it's a very welcome feature to have a camera with an LCD on the top.

If getting a D90 I'd seriously consider buying 2nd hand. You can pick one up for about £400-£450, leaving you plenty for lenses - you should also be able to get a 2nd hand 18-105 and a 35 prime with your budget and still have a few quid left for other stuff.

Just checked MPB - they've got D90s from £449 including a 6 month warranty. Nice. ;)
(Other camera retailers are available. Terms and conditions apply. Your home is at risk etc etc)
