Is a Canon 28m f/1.8 USM a Good Lens?

Not much more to say. Looking at it for my 400D as a 'subtle' walkabout.

That link above gives the impression to me that the lens isn't up to much really. Unless I am reading it wrong. That's the trouble, too much info and I'm now completely baffled as to what is decent and what's not. I dont want to buy duff stuff!
 
this is also a lens I'd love to try. I do a lot of gig stuff and often find my nifty isan't wide enough in the smaller venues.
 
I have no experience of the Canon lens, but I'm sure it will be fine. Most primes are superior to zoom lenses and as you'll be using it on a cropped sensor, you will be using the central part of the lens, which means the quality should be pretty good.

I do have the Sigma 30mm f1.4 and whilst it doesn't get a lot of use, the results I've had have been very good indeed.

i take it a 28mm will not be distorted on crop sensors?
 
Cheers RDH, I found that site since originally posting :)

I am still in 2 minds as it seems to get comments regarding softness and I'm not really experienced enough to know whether it's something that even i'd notice, or whether it's just more professional users being really picky.
 
I've got one and use it a lot.
The main reason I didn't even consider the Sigma is because if I ever can afford to go full frame, I don't want to have to ditch my existing glass.

It's not as blisteringly sharp as my 50mm f1.4, but it's a great walk around length on a crop body.

I don't seem to have been very good at tagging my flickr stuff, so I can't search what I've got on there for the 28mm focal length.
Suffice to say that I'm very happy with the lens.

No, it shouldn't be - as I said in my previous post, only the central part of the image circle will be used, so even wide open, the quality ought to be pretty good. Lens quality tends to fall off at the edges of the image circle. You'll also be pretty immune from vignetting.

was wondwering as maybe interested in using this as a portrait lens! I realyl dont want distoted images with people!
 
You shouldn't do as the effective focal length is 44mm on a 1.6 sensor - very close the the 'ideal' for a standard lens. So distortion should be minimal I think.
