Is 300mm enough for birds?

I'd suggest the Nikkor 200-500 f5.6 rather than the Tamron/Sigma 150-500/600. Found my Sigma 150-500 a bit too unwieldy for bird/aerial photography.

300 mm is enough when you shoot from hide. There are many birders who used 300/2.8mm. In fact you can photograph the owls with 300 mm from a window if they are perched on a tree next to the building.

And this photo was taken at 400mm focal length, but I had to step back a few steps.

Wow! Thanks. That is just a prove of what I was thinking - if crowded, or popular places where people are always present, birds going to be used to that and could be good place to photograph them. That is a point for shorter, like 200mm lens, but yeah, in general, if I would like to walk in the woods, 300-400mm would be better.

To be honest, I'm not into birds, but I would love to photograph some owls!

Try to find out if there are Short Eared Owls in your area.
You can photograph them in daylight
