Is 17 40L a better option?

I have a 400D and am looking to upgrade the kit lens. My query is where to go from here for a next lens. I am looking for a walkabout lens and have worked myself to not know where to jump. My initial thoughts are:

17 50 f2.8 Tamron
18 50 f2.8 Sigma
17 40 f4 L Canon

Although I have also looked at 24 70 f2.8's which look like they could be an option, but will I miss the wideness?

Is the Canon worth the money or will for my camera the Tamron or Sigma give me better value for money?

I shoot portraits and Skateboarding mainly, although I shoot most things.

My current kit lens wise is Sigma fisheye, Canon 70 200 F4L and a nifty fifty.

Do you have a budget in mind? Canon's are more expensive than the third party lenses. If you say how much you want to spend, that will help people in giving advice and maybe making other suggestions :thumbs:

How about a 17-55 f2.8 EF-S. Expensive, but a superb lens for a crop sensor.
 
I love mine and it produces some lovely results but am sure others would advise getting something with a slightly longer, at the long end, focal length.
 
Looking at what you shoot I would go for one of the 2.8's. It will help in poor light for your skateboarding and nice dof and sharpness in portraits.

Although as BertRoot hinted at you may be better served with a lens with a longer focal length.

If you're looking for a really good walkabout lens, I don't think you can do much better than the Canon 17-55 f/2.8. It's just as fast at the tamron, but also has IS and USM (quick and silent) focussing. The 17-40 L isn't especially fast (f/4), and you might find only 40mm at the long end a bit limiting!

Budget is up to around £500 max, and that is pushing it. Just if I can get the quality for less then will take it. So am I right in thinking the Tamron is better than the Sigma, seems to be the general opinion on reviews. How much is the Canon going to run at second hand? and is the extra worth it? Is IS worth having, as never used it before, and is the USM that much faster?

I know a lot of questions, but just want to get it right first time. Thanks for the help so fr everyone.

I have the Tamron 17-50 and I do like it but, since using an IS lens I wish I had saved up a bit more and bought the Canon 17-55. You should be able to pick one up second hand for around £500.
 
i have the tamron 2.8 and its brilliant, id love a 17-55 canon vbut its over twice the price.
 
I've seen the tamron go for around £200 on here, whereas the canon is £500-£550 (and going up :eek: ). I'm lusting after the canon, but realistically I can't see myself being in a position to afford it for a long time!
 
At £200 it seems to be a bit of a steal. Think the Tamron it is. Leaves money for one of the new Pocket Wizards to add to the collection.

Just one last question. How much would I look to get for a 17 55 standard kit lens and an olde 28 80 USM. I know not much but just want to price them so I can get rid.

Do you mean 17-85? Or 18-55 kit lens?

Ah right, not too sure then! There's a mark 1 and a mark 2 version, and there's an IS one as well. Probably £50 for the former, £70-£80 for the latter? But I'm not entirely sure!

I have to say the 24-105mm IS L is my walkaround and if I know I need something wider then I would slip the 11-16 in my pocket as well. :-)
 
The 17-55 is a great lens ( i only just got mine, but really like it already). You might just be able to pick up a used one for £500, although i think you will probably be looking nearer £600!
